I am currently in a worse set of circumstances after the last half hours SMS messages.
Apparently no one knows where said Scalextric sets are because it appears they are not safely stored in the loft we thought they were.
    We are currently arguing!
I have my Columbo Mackintosh ready.

Yep, if you're going to venture out in hunting season in rural France the best thing is top-grade military body-armour. Won't stop a head shot or a lethal shot below the hip but better than nothing.
If one of a bunch of Savoyards shoots you, by accident or otherwise, and you were wearing dayglo gear while riding a mountain-bike along a path with no trees, his mates will all swear blind you were wearing a deer costume complete with antlers and were on all fours.

    Exactly.
If the whole world hadn't turned into a whining bunch of ponces that "can't bear" this or "needs counselling for" that, the authorities wouldn't have been able to ruin everyone's 2020 and 2021 and maybe more with all the Covid bollocks - some people would have died, and life would have continued.

Hmm. They sound like a right family of fuckups, and as for the mother not noticing, hmm again.
How many boys would be physically capable of rape at the age of 10? I know I wasn't.
Something very odd about the whole story. The shooting clearly wasn't an accident;  I suspect there was more to it, the locals closed ranks, and the local plod said nah, it's a scumbag foreigner, we're not bothered.

I never, ever go walking in forests in France in hunting season. They're cunts, and dangerous cunts at that, then if you add the fact that they're uncivilised thick Savoyards in my neck of the woods, well you really don't want to be near them when they have guns unless you're deeply entrenched in their little group, whatever group that may be.

Mark's sister paid a moving tribute to her brother

Same here. Fishing rod had to be the best present. I remain utterly useless to this day at fishing. Looking back, the time fishing with my late father and uncle, pretty much set me up with the basics of lifes knowledge.
This ranged from a swollen dogs penis in a bitch through to, they all keep the working man down lad, you will never be free of them.
In between such hefty statements I was allowed to explore and at 7 or 8, chase a field full of bullocks all over the place. Not sure how wise that was, new skill acquired. Not pracised much since.
I learnt so much from my late father then. Everything you should have learnt in school but didnt.
All down to that 9ft fishing rod.

Freshwater fish is all about how you cook it. I discovered in adult life that it's possible to make decent meals with perch and pike too (tried them as a kid and the results were revolting). Eels are good too if cooked right, but careful where they've been living as they accumulate pollutants.

The fences have been made softer, after the do-gooders got involved with the Grand National. The result is that speed becomes more important than jumping ability. It won't prevent deaths because horses will travel faster and not respect the fences.
In the past you saw "firm" in a lot of going descriptions. Now the courses pour millions of gallons of water on to artificially soften the ground. It may save a few horses being jarred up but over time it weakens the constitution of horses.

Exactly my take when I scanned the article in the BBC.
People are so disinterested/removed from the natural world now that a dead animal is shocking to them.
There's a farm near us with a footpath going through it,  we took a stroll with the kids thinking it would be good for them to see what a farm looks like.    Just past the entrance,  two dead calves were heaped to one side..   presumably waiting to be collected by whoever takes them to the knackers yard.
The kids were curious/shocked,     and on the way back we bumped into the farmer who was a bit apologetic.   I told him there was no need,   that it was good the kids get to see the reality.
Anyone who thinks these working animals should be given the same treatment as a human with burial and full military honours.. I'm not sure they're living in the real world.   In fact,  it is illegal to bury them.  There is only an exemption for pets because otherwise everyone would kick off about not being able to bury their beloved Mr Tiddles in the back garden..   but it's really for the benefit of the people,   not the animals.
The guy in the picture just looks like someone dealing with the monotony of having to shift another dead horse.  Not someone posing for a woke journo's hatchet piece.

This video has caused palava in France the last days. Basically some hunters are walking through a private field. A pet boar comes out to have a look at what is going on and one of the hunters kills him. Another hunter yells at the shooter "are you mad, that's not on".
The owner, Alain, complained to the police who did nothing as the hunting lobby is very powerful.
Now the video has surfaced but the big issues are around the conduct of the hunters. One fires a gun at the pig with his colleague standing on the other side, it would have been easy to hit him or maybe ricochet could have killed other people. The law also says that hunters are not supposed to walk around with loaded guns - they should only be loaded during the hunt.
All kinds of 'elf and safety issues.
But given that hunters managed to shoot someone dead nearly every weekend during the season it is pretty much normal behaviour.
As the joke goes in France "what's the difference between a hunter and a bottle of beer? You can find alcohol free beer".
Anyway the minister of agriculture has told the prosecutor to investigate the incident and that the police and prosecutor are being monitored closely.
But everyone is fair game for French hunters. Like this jogger in Annecy

The only thing that photo shows, and the fact that he allowed it to be public, is that he, in his fairly rough tough horse racing world where horses and other animals die every day, is completely out of touch with where the rest of the world's poncey mentality now is.

I got an Acorn System One for my 18th ... inadequate father meant that our farm ran on child labour,  the brunt of which fell on me -- I think this was Mum's way of saying "thanks"
Never used it much, partly because there was a ROM bug that meant the mass storage interface didn't work until you'd laboriously overridden the cassette tape interrupt (looking back, they should have sent out new ROMs) and partly because of the pace of change at the time.
I kept it boxed with manuals etc. all these years, and sold it a while back for a rather eye watering sum.

    A fishing rod.
This forced me to learn to swim (condition of me going fishing on my own or with mates) and led to many happy days fishing and mucking about with mates by various rivers/lakes in the area. And quite a few decent meals of trout, with the odd not-very-nice other fish and once a load of crayfish.
