I cycle to work, it's about 10% very quiet residential roads, and 90% down the taff trail. It's great, but I wouldn't dream of cycling on busy roads with any regulatory. There's just too much of a discrepancy between the relative risk to drivers and cyclists. Drivers are comfortable taking risks that are small to them, inside their big metal box, but potentially deadly for me if I'm mixing in amongst them on a bicycle.Β

I'm a bit torn on this one. I know his fastest trial time I think was 5hr45 and the slowest marathon was around 9 hours. So even his fastest could be considered a very brisk walk.
But he did do these distances in succession without any training and he wasn't very fit, so its probably the equivalent of me doing a few marathons in a row at 3:30 so he deserves some credit I think.Β

    1. Google the function.
    2. Use an answer on Stack Overflow to have a stab a what numbery things you put in as function parameters.
    3. If it builds and runs, let's hope it's doing the right number crunching, or at the very least if it's not, that recruiter on LinkedIn will have you in your next job as a Senior Data Scientist by the time your current company figures out you've fucked up.

Ive always thought the Β£1 a day was the least of it.Β  How can a company that has to pay for a workers health and social security, their retirement, environmental regulations, their safety at work compete with a company that doesn't.Β

Are we saying warehouse workers shouldn't be paid more than teachers?Β
Why not?. If that's what's required to get people to work in a warehouse than so be it.Β
Presumably teachers will start leaving the classroom to drive forklifts, and then they'll have to pay more to get teachers.Β

That may be but the election results don't reflect that very strongly. A slight shift away from Merkelism perhaps, but not an earthquake. I suspect they're going to react too little and too late, as in Sweden.

Since discovering Spoons serve food until 11pm and their app I’ve probably been to more than a dozen right across the country and they have all been far from full even on a Friday or Saturday. Well in my fantasist's land where we have tried increasing hourly rates significantly, in hard to recruit areas, it makes little difference. Basically, there is whatever pool of NMW labour there is. Within sensible reason there isn't a wage you can lure someone who's not in the NMW job market they simply will not look at jobs they perceive as NMW or be lured to them by paying well above NMW.
Even if you could straighforwardly, there's the ramification that you can't really get away with pricing differently on the shelf edge to cover it so in effect retail prices are aggregated nationally, as the market is more dominated by a handful of chains than ever,Β andΒ people in low income high unemployment areas Β (areas with a large pool of people in the NMW job market)Β are essentially subsiding the shopping bills of people in high income high employment areas.
Not my opinion but what has been concluded by various studies that have been commissioned in the industry and I don't disagree. NMW it appears has simply stigmatised a wide range of roles, and continues to suck more in, as NMW and once people's careers have progressed beyond them they simply will not entertain returning to them - they might possibly if there was some huge squeeze on household finances but there isn't presently.
I am in favour of leaving the EU, and you can all come back and say 'I told you so', if we ever do and Eu immigration is reduced significantly but I still strongly suspect these issues will persist regardless and stopping immigration and exiling all exisiting migrantsΒ may not be the solution to the universal equation of everything that's echo chambered on here.Β Β

Doesn’t link to the BoE report itself.Β  But I found it here
    https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/working-paper/2015/the-impact-of-immigration-on-occupational-wages-evidence-from-britain
some interesting stuff in it.Β Β

In other words a 10% rise in immigration alone, would lead to a 0.54 percent fall in wages β€” that is the size of the compositional effect. It is striking that the compositional effect is small when compared to the large impact of 1.88 percent reported above. From this we conclude that the impact of immigration on wages in semi/unskilled services is much larger than can be accounted for by purely compositional effects, suggesting that the vast majority of this effect refers to the impact on native workers. The same cannot be said for skilled production workers. Here a 10% rise in immigration lowers wages by 1.68%, but the compositional effect is in the same ball park, around 1.13%. So for skilled production workers the impact of immigration on wages can largely be accounted for the compositional effect.
We find that the ratio of EU to non-EU immigrants has a very small impact on wages, and is only significant in the dynamic model (Table 6). The table tells us that a 10% rise in immigration, and constant EU/non-EU immigrant ratio, would lower overall wages by 0.33%. But if a 10% rise in immigration was such that the EU/non-EU immigrant share also rose by 10%, overall wages would likely fall by 0.31%. These differences are tiny. It tells us that impact of immigration on wages is driven mainly by the overall total stock of immigration, with its composition β€” EU vs non-EU β€” having a second order impact.
