TheBlueCat got a reaction from Bedrag Justesen in When did you last use a fax machine?
I'm pretty sure we never listed ours anywhere either (long time back so I may be wrong) and that it was discovered by some random dialler process that called numbers until it got the fax machine handshake tone. Either that or it could have been someone who took business phone numbers and dialled a number one greater in the hope of it being a fax machine. After that we left it switched off unless we knew there was definitely something incoming. Total pain in the arse either way.

A couple of years ago when sending documents to the CRA (Canadian equivalent of HMRC). They do now however have a secure email option so I don't expect to repeat that experience.
Does anyone else remember the days of fax machines that could only spew paper out rather than generating an email with an attached PDF or whatever? The first one I set up for my small business back in the early 90s was online for about a week before being discovered by spammers (or whatever they were called back then) who promptly used up my entire roll of expensive fax paper sending me adverts for timeshares and the like. Cunts!

Back to the subject of Grimsby.
I work on the outskirts and live about 16 miles away, close to a small market town. 16 miles takes about 20 minutes in the car.
There are lots of very pleasant places to live in the Grimsby/Cleethorpes area. Like everywhere else, you need to be careful selecting somewhere as there are some dodgy areas - but generally less dodgy than all the big cities.
Highly paid employment is available if you are in Oil & Gas, Chemicals, Power Generation, Wind Turbines or shipping. The biggest local employers are  the food industry which is poorly paid - but minimum wage goes a lot further in Grimsby that it does almost anywhere else. As you have established for yourself, housing is dirt cheap, and most things here are pretty inexpensive.
The issue with the town is location, location and location - it is on the road to nowhere. Sheffield, Leeds and York are less than 1 1/2 hours away by roads that are largely car free. Beverley and Lincoln are less than an hour away, and both are properly lovely.
I moved into the area (from the North) and have found the people to be typically Northern in attitude - pretty friendly, relaxed, fairly socially conservative. I know plenty of southern softies that have moved in, they all seem pretty relaxed and in no rush to move back south.
The immigrants seem to be largely East European and cause no particular problem, we don't have a big ethnic minority population, and the none-whites that live here (reasonable size Asian population in Scunthorpe) seem fairly well integrated. We don''t get race riots or perceive there to be a problem with Muslim gangs grooming white girls - but maybe they are just very discrete !
We have lived here 24 years and have raised two kids and been pretty happy living a remarkably low stress life.
Occasionally we make the trip down south to the big smoke, and we are always very pleased to get home.
    Hope this helps.

Used to go to Blackpool a lot when I was a kid to stay with relatives and it was actually pretty nice back then. Last one I went there in around 2008 it was an utter crap-hole.

Not wishing to rain on the parade here, but what's happening in Paris doesn't exactly look like "mass" protest. It's nothing like as large as the poll tax riots in the 80s or any of the riots in the City in the 2000s for example. Looking around the various live streams shows a few clumps of may be 100-200 protestors at a time. Unless it's like that over large areas - which I can't see any evidence it is - we're looking at a few thousand people maximum involved. That's hardly the start of a revolution.

That may well be right but I thInk they’re very wrong about how it would play out in reality. The public’s response to being attacked by a bunch of foreign soldiers would likely be very different than if it was their own. Imagine the reaction if a bunch of German squaddies fetched up in London and started shooting people.

No. Back then everyone was trying to get from Paris to north Africa. Now it's the other way around!

That’s what we have been saying on here for a couple of weeks. The EU army’s sole purpose is to quash insurrection.

Interesting analysis from Larry Elliott in the Graun (I know, but he's anti-EU and not an SJW as far as I can tell):

His hypothesis is that Macron is angling for fiscal union with the krauts because he knows the game is up with the Euro so has to make similar economic changes to the ones made by Schroeder after re-unification to persuade them it'll work. The fucking traitor might as well just ask the Germans to send in their army to "restore order" if you ask me.

I could never live in Germany, I would find it impossible not to make some sillly Nazi reference which would either get me locked up or given a good kicking (I’m thinking ein volk in this case).
