The pair paid £550,000 for the house, spending £50,000 doing it up - including nearly £10,000 just to remove the fence - with another £100,000 needed to finish the project, which they say could take 15 years to complete.

The couple have been told the house 'could be worth £800,000 when it is finished.'

So ... 550k + 50k + 100k + (2 x 20k * 10) = ~1m.

Chris, a production journalist, and Carole, an executive assistant, sold their family house in June 2018 and moved 17 miles away after their children, marketing executive, Emma, 31, and landscape architect James, 27, grew up and moved out.

Lot's of the usual small minded petty comment here as normal . This is a lovely home in a wonderful area and they've sold a boring 60's house and got bags and bags of character and lots of hard work for a lot of years . The big plus is that if you love the place then it never seems like work so you don't mind

Less than 20mls from York next to Howden and near Pocklington it's a quiet pleasant area !! You can always bring in the negatives

Normally when the kids leave home you downsize. What exactly do they want with all that extra space?

Yeah right, don’t rub it in. o.O

It's one of my little pleasures.

Mine have been (sort of) back for summer but are off on Monday on a road trip.

I dont have a clue.

They indicate they are not selling for 10 years.

Or maybe theyve run out of cash.

I did think were from way-away, and bought a big house in a cheap area.

However, they seem to live nearby, which makes it even more nuts.

Yes, Hapendon is twee n posh. even for the area.

But the rest of the goes down hill rapidly.

I just dotn see hwhat the end game is?

Why, a that age, upsize to a big fucking house, with the extra cost.

I don't think it's the extra cost that'll do them in, it's the amount of work. 3 hours to mow the lawn is what it takes me but I'm early 30s. Wouldn't want to be doing that in my 60s or 70s.

We're in a similar situation. My wife wants to downsize to a bigger house. I want a much bigger garden, at least 1/2 an acre and ideally more. What better way to expire than working hard to renovate a house and create a garden. Better that than to sit dribbling in a chair in a retirement or care home.

I love it the great eccentrics I could strole around in my smoking jacket feeling the Minton floor tiles under my bare feet and relax in my study with my collection of 1970s porn mags to er study them and even have my own room with a naff council estate type bar and pool table and slot machines

Think about it very carefully. We had 5 acres (only two were formal) and it was a huge amount of work.

I think the best solution is a very small area that is yours, overlooking a fantastic view that you don't need to look after.

We have gone rogue - bought a large house with large garden for the 2 of us aged 60. (Retired.)

Only excuse is it was cheaper per m2 in France than in the UK and not in need of immediate renovation. (Just some regular updating/small improvements.)

As said by someone else above, this is to keep us busy. Other half said he was up to doing the garden (with help from some machines) and so far so good. (I do very little!)

We are letting most of the outer parts revert to forest to make maintenance easier & capture some CO2 om behalf the rest of you! So just tending the grass around the house really.

Cleaning is more of a challenge but as we are only 2 of us, I keep the main parts adequate & do a whole house sweep only in case of visitors!

In general it's hard to see the dust/cobwebs unless you get in close/have very good eyesight!  And I half close the shutters to hide any dirty windows.

A modern flat would be less work and we might regret our choice but so far it's a nice house & we like living there.

No fantasy about it being easy to sell shd we need to not that we won't lose money in it. But we don't have expensive habits really so this is our chosen folly!
