1950s songs

Recommended Posts

The Righteous Brother were not to sing 'Unchained Melody' until some 10 years after it was first released. At one point in the 50's 3 different singles were in the US top 10 with it and, here in the UK, 4 singers were in the top 20.

It was common in those days for songs to travel the Atlantic only to be recorded to by a Brit singer. This is the Jimmy Young version sounding similar to what would become the Righteous Brothers classic. However, some of the US versions sounded somewhat odd to say the least. Liberace, for example, recorded it in the UK identically to the original version by Les Baxter - both sound a bit naff IMPO as half the record is just instrumental.

Sorry mate - I'm fairly certain that the actor Lee Marvin did ''Wandering Star'' and not Johnny Ray...

Aw, OK.

Even squinting as hard as I can, I can't quite see it myself mind.

The 'Dirty Dozen'' would have been pretty shit with poor-old Johnny Ray flouncing all over a piano...

;)
