Money for nothing. And your same-sex, or whatever gender they identify as, partner for free.

Where 25-year-old Cecilia Manduca works there is a "pay self-assessment process". Put simply, the workers there decide how much they are worth and should be paid.

Recently she awarded herself a £7,000 pay rise, taking her annual salary to £37,000.

"I felt a lot of doubts asking for that raise," she told BBC Radio 5 Live's Wake Up To Money.

"It took a lot of talks with other people. I was aware that my job had changed. I was aware I was going way beyond my targets.

"I knew that from a rational point of view I deserved that higher rate. But I had a lot of self-doubt and I felt sort of greedy because there's always a stigma - a sense you should feel happy with what you have.

"When I spoke with my colleagues internally and asked for advice, the advice they gave me was that yes I did deserve it and I was worth it."

Her employer, GrantTree, helps UK business get government funding and all of its 45 staff set their own salary, which they can review as often as they like.

Self-set pay is the latest innovation among companies that are competing for the top talent and want to show they offer the most attractive employment terms.

Lets just piss everything away ....

And, part of thread crossing - shes Italian!

So we are paying EUers to piss our taxes away!

Here's her linkin, just in case you thought she was worth the money

Hmm.  It is an interesting development.

See, we're at late-cycle at the moment -- lots of money sloshing around and the labour market is tight.  What happens when money tightens and there's lots of labour sloshing around -- presumably people are encouraged to lower their salary?  Or do their peers vote on new people coming in at a lower wage?  Or does the organisation just fold because everyone decides that everyone is most definitely worth it?

The pay thing is stupid but the actual purpose that the company serves is decent.

There are a lot of companies and organisations entitled to grant funding and they generally don't know how to obtain it and how to prduce the application that it will be successful.

I was heavily involved in a a Social Enterprise Funding bid (SEIF) about ten years ago and the work is fairly specialist.

As a lower level example I was chatting to a member of a local bowls club and he was saying how they were having to pay for a new roof because they couldn't meet the grant funding criteria. I asked what they were of interest and he said one of them was how it would improve access for people not currently at the club with the obvious one being to bring in younger people and they couldn't see how a new roof would meet that.

I pointed out that they should be being more ambitious in the grant by going for a grant for a new roof, disabled toilets and ramp, and tie it in with a new members launch event.  Offer free trial membership to young and disabled people.  That way they could get the roof fixed, facilities improved and new members in (which they anyway wanted).

I wasn't saying this cynically but, with my knowledge of the grant systems, setting out how they could get their roof fixed and a lot else besides.

His response was "oh" as the penny dropped.  I didn't puruse it as I don't want to spend my free time writing grant applications for societies with whom I have no connection; whether for free or for a charge.

For Charles Towers-Clark, the boss of software firm Pod Group, the system seems to work smoothly.

His 45 employees have chosen their own pay for two years now, leading to a 10% increase in total salaries paid and a huge increase in staff retention.

'Are you worth it?'

If someone at Pod Group wants to increase their salary, they tell the HR director who appoints six staff to provide feedback.

Occasionally staff have asked for far more than the market rate, he admits.

"It's not people being greedy, it's a lack of understanding," he says.

"A fairly junior person didn't comprehend that the salary increase she was asking for was too much, she was asking for a 50% increase on her salary, which was far more than the role was worth.

"It was her decision but I told her: 'you can take it but if you become uneconomical or your value is not justified then that will only end one way'.

"She reduced what she was asking for after that."

My highlight.  It doesn't seem a bad way of identifying the market rate.

I suppose then you have to ask what sets the market rate and is the market rate fair.  It's not always supply and demand is it.  Typically directors are on a never ending competition between each other to out compete on wages usually through remuneration committees - all in it together - you vote for my rise and I'll vote for yours type of thing.

It also often seems that employees differentials are pretty much set in stone.

For instance look at any annual UK pay league over time including what they term professionals and every year you will see more or less the same jobs at the top of the pay league and the same jobs in the middle and bottom etc as if relative supply and demand never changes much.  Irrespective of the skills needed in each job.  As if there is a predetermined hierarchy for wages.  Wages go up, wages go down but the basic league hierarchy doesn't change if at all.  It almost seems like it's a cultural thing.

I always thought it was cheques for free, not chicks, and while I'm no songwriter I think that'd have been a better lyric based on the rest of the song.

Had me worried for a minute.

I thought that *I* was wrong.

Now look at them yo-yo's, that's the way you do it
You play the guitar on the MTV
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Money for nothin' and your chicks for free
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Lemme tell ya, them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your little finger
Maybe get a blister on your thumb
We got to install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveries
We got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TV's
See the little faggot with the earring and the make up
Yeah buddy that's his own hair
That little faggot got his own jet airplane
That little faggot he's a millionaire
We got to install microwave ovens, custom kitchen deliveries

We got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TV's
I shoulda learned to play the guitar
I shoulda learned to play them drums
Look at that mama she got it stickin' in the camera man
We could have some-
And he's up there, what's that?
Hawaiian noises?
Bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Get your money for nothin', get your chicks for free

Whilst I can't remember which offhand I have seen several of these lyrics sites make a mistake with regard to a particular song and that then be replicated across all the sites.

They are contributed by the site users rather than the songwriter or publisher so they may well be wrong.

I heard it as "chicks" tbh but he may well be singing "cheques".

he sings in mild geordie, so its obviosuly chicks (to me).

chick = chiks.

cheques = ch-E-que.
