Funny, it was a shite builder that got me into the game!  Had to cancel future work and redo myself.  Cheaper, easy, and far better.  So off I went.

But will always use trades where necessary or where I want a top job.  Just hard to know.  Even the best have bad days and jobs.  I also look after them as I appreciate what it's like on the other end.  The good/confident ones will open up and work well for a proper job.

The problem these days is the race to the bottom on product and skills.  Like say sheds.  Sound cheap and set an expectation but can be total rubbish for most people.  Good stuff costs while cheap shite just costs later, plus a bit more.

Interesting how the majority these days won't try.  I read this week that TP is looking to sell Wickes and focus on the trades as that's the trend - pay someone to do something.  Seen this personally too.  The young guy in Ikea seemed amazed I would fit the stuff myself.  Younguns not even prepared to make (assemble!) a bed!  Maybe a sign of the attitudes instilled at school these days (cult of the so called "educated" so called specialist, etc)

Maybe trades will have a good future!

PS:  The Ikea kitchen folk have some excellent talents and experience.  Some are well used to hackers (like me) using their stuff for other things!  Like campervans!

Trying to save £££ on materials is nuts.

Its the labour thats costly.

There are conoanies orgs people im happy to go out on a branch n sort out, without having a contract in place. I know tgeyll pay me and well be able to sort any niggles out like grownup adults, not toddler-lawyers.

There are other orgs where, even if everything was nailed down 200% and fully specced whod make my life hell n quibble about tge niney - after signing off on tge rates.

I avoid these - Im sorry, im not got a window for 24 months. Shall i pencil you in for 2022?

I went to a professional annual conference two years back which included a session on setting up your own practice.  The best line I ever heard (and a very common one) was that you know you've finally arrived when you can afford to get rid of your worst clients and can avoid to avoid future ones!  So true.  You finally build up a good and reliable client base, often taking on anything at the start, and then you finally realise you can start pruning with a few price hikes or, if it was really that painful, a face to face!  I'm sure some clients prey on the enthusiastic start ups.

True.  Increasingly, the dilemma is whether to use something more expensive but quicker or stick to the old ways, especially when the new stuff is relatively unproven.  The other issue is that "Trying to save £££ on materials is nuts" applies to the merchants as well - you need to look carefully at what they are selling and keep your ear to the ground to make sure it's OK stuff.  For example, tantalised stuff can vary between supplier in terms of how well it's been done.  And then there was all that shite Chinese plywood doing the rounds.

Some companies do - witness XXX wants a bright, hardwork <vague description>

Fuck that. You want stuff you pay.

A lot of small companies/self employed are created by people who are do useless andor cuntish that noone will employ them.

Somethings up when me a glorified care worker is on the national avarage wage ie I should hit 30-31k

I think you sell yourself short. Like a lot of blue-collar men's jobs these days, it's massively under-paid considering how few people could actually do it, let alone want to do it. I really don't understand how jobs which essentially most people COULDN'T do are so poorly-paid. Supply and demand doesn't seem to apply.

I knew this c*nt who set himself up as a sparks but gave up saying there was no market for it.  What he meant was there was no market for c*nts!  I do love a free market!

Makes me wonder why i see these poncy tattoo'd and bearded 20 something cunts working at supermarket checkouts, or behind a bar and as waiters when they can earn so much money elsewhere ... but theyd need to get their hands dirty and lift heavy things that arent attached to a weight lifting bar.

Ive always fucken hated manual work and getting my hands dirty ... im scared of heights for FFS, but my day rate is higher than almost everyone i know thanks to a willingness to get my hands dirty, work at heights and go to the shittest parts of earth to work in dangerous environments.

My friends kid in his 20s works at KFC, if i had a son doing that i'd be ashamed ... at least being a hod carrier or a labourer on site will eventually lead somewhere and in certain quarters they're respected.

What a piece of shit, why would anyone pay £300k for that?

Because it's in Winchester, which is massively over-priced and populated by pretentious cunts who think their farts smell of lavender. In reality, the city is boring, it also has a massive dosser problem totally at odds with the dinner party set's worship of the place.

Yep, like most of the SW then, If you can call it SW. Dorsets full of similar twats,"dont i live in a beutiful place?" well yes, but you cant use the scenery it belongs to someone else, you just live in a rabbit hutch surrounded by idiots like the rest of us.

I know a woman in Dorset who wears the flowery dresses etc, dead posh she is but i always notice the black smack stains on her teeth.Living the dream.

I was thinking about starting to drink wine and move there ... and sticking my kid into St Swithuns just round the corner. (honestly; well not the wine part)

The dinner party set would have to learn to accept microwave dinners on their laps in front of the TV if i bought that though.

About 20 years ago during my days as a building site worker, i worked on a house in Winchester that must have been 200m2, with circa 5 acres adjacent to it ... they bought it for £100k!

It is now known as London by the M3, with all the wankdom that such a moniker would imply, including house price inflation.

In 1998 i nearly bought a static mobile home on a plot in Ansty Dorset with planning and half an acre, well someone else did buy it, must be a fuck off expensive pad these days with chickens and carrots. It was £65,000.

Trying hard not to stereotype the good Gentlefolk from the NE (as that would be so un-PC, although there's always an element of truth in it!), it would be like Oz (Auf wiedersen) mixing with Margo and Jerry (Good life)! :-) :-) :-)

I grew up in Winchester, and moved back there in 2006. Never heard it called that. Not denying there is plenty of London money there of course.

Because a few miles down the road in a shitter area with worse schools something similar would cost 250k?

But someone paid 330k for an identical one, just a few months ago.

Exactly. Winall is mostly ex council, but it's a 15 minutes walk into town, and the schools are generally very good. There are. Lot worse places to live.

Did you buy in 2006?

Yes, moved down from Fleet. Bought a house in Badger Farm. Kids could walk to school from there. Yes, it's not the dream house, but location is good, and it's all mine now!

Your contract must be good if you can afford st Swithin's!! Mine all went to Kings. Didn't do them any harm.
