Car mechanics Thread

Question

Thought it would be handy to have a motoring technical thread.

YouTube is full of dross form amateur mechanics but this guy seems to know what he is talking about, and there are some good tips:

How to Check a Used Car Before Buying (Checking the Engine) (one a series of Videos)

A few comments: On startup, some cars light up all the warning lights briefly to show that the lights themselves work.

In cold (British) weather, I expect a little vapour from the exhaust on cold startup, more than in this video.

On-line checks can be made about write-offs, MOT, etc in the UK.

The video comments are pretty hilarous too.

Quote
If there's no oil under a British car, there's no oil in it.

If the seller doesn’t slap roof of the car don’t buy it’s a scam

Step 1. Get inspired by ChrisFix engine cleaning videos
Step 2. Try to sell the car
Step 3. Get accused of hiding issues

Make sure it's a mixture of two cars the same colour (and preferably make), and the plod aren't interested in your number plate.

Don't remind me of head gasket leaks. All my water came out, and I got stuck.
