My sentiments exactly.

I'm just wondering how ridiculous the claims will get and just how long they can be used. They're still trying it on with Trump.

Does anyone get the feeling that the entirety of Western civilisation went completely mad somewhere between 2011 and 2015?

Everyone in charge in the EU seems to be utter fucking imbeciles (or alternatively deliberately trying to destroy their countries), utterly ludicrous conspiracy theories are everywhere, the media lie non stop about everything that is more important than the weather or football scores. What the fuck is going on? How can we ever return to sanity?

You too? What's worse is people I previously respected seem to be buying into it all, no questions asked. I'd just assumed it was my age and life situation had given me greater insight into what it had been like all along. On balance, if it's me or the entire Western world, I consider it more likely I've got it wrong purely from a statistical POV. Doesn't quite sit right with me though!

I time it from Live Aid onwards.  Mass acceptance of something being  'right' beyond question, when a moments thought would have lead anyone with a brain to the conclusion that the solution 'bung lots of food and money at people' was WRONG.

I was telling some Thais and Japanese about what was going on in Europe and they just refused to believe what I was telling them, so completely alien is it to any form of logic, common sense or prior historial example. Putin is evidently also completely exasperated and shocked at what is happening in Europe as well.

I live in Germany and came pretty close to a nervous breakdown during Merkel's catastrophe. Obviously from a logical and philosphical point of view, it was far more likely that I had gone mad rather than nearly everyone else in the country, but a couple of months later it was obvious that German had gone nuts.

I seem to recall someone quoting Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds in one of the first threads on this forum (can't remember who sorry). It seemed very appropriate!

Here's the preface, for those who are unfamiliar:

In reading The History of Nations, we find that, like individuals, they have their whims and their peculiarities; their seasons of excitement and recklessness, when they care not what they do. We find that whole communities suddenly fix their minds upon one object, and go mad in its pursuit; that millions of people become simultaneously impressed with one delusion, and run after it, till their attention is caught by some new folly more captivating than the first. We see one nation suddenly seized, from its highest to its lowest members, with a fierce desire of military glory; another as suddenly becoming crazed upon a religious scruple; and neither of them recovering its senses until it has shed rivers of blood and sowed a harvest of groans and tears, to be reaped by its posterity. At an early age in the annals of Europe its population lost their wits about the sepulchre of Jesus, and crowded in frenzied multitudes to the Holy Land; another age went mad for fear of the devil, and offered up hundreds of thousands of victims to the delusion of witchcraft. At another time, the many became crazed on the subject of the philosopher’s stone, and committed follies till then unheard of in the pursuit. It was once thought a venial offence, in very many countries of Europe, to destroy an enemy by slow poison. Persons who would have revolted at the idea of stabbing a man to the heart, drugged his pottage without scruple. Ladies of gentle birth and manners caught the contagion of murder, until poisoning, under their auspices, became quite fashionable. Some delusions, though notorious to all the world, have subsisted for ages, flourishing as widely among civilised and polished nations as among the early barbarians with whom they originated — that of duelling, for instance, and the belief in omens and divination of the future, which seem to defy the progress of knowledge to eradicate them entirely from the popular mind. Money, again, has often been a cause of the delusion of multitudes. Sober nations have all at once become desperate gamblers, and risked almost their existence upon the turn of a piece of paper. To trace the history of the most prominent of these delusions is the object of the present pages. Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

Yes, it's Brexit and Trump all over again - the amazing thing is that they're so convinced people will believe the narrative, when what seems to happen instead is that the majority publicly toes the official line and then goes and does the complete opposite in private. It's almost as if the establishment believe that they do have the ability to control what everyone thinks, but keep finding out in rather obvious and embarrassing ways that it isn't working.

If the desired result is impeachment, which is what they're aiming for, has nobody given thought to the fact this will create unprecedented civil unrest?

It's just not going to happen
