Coronavirus Online Gaming / Chat Thread

Now I have a headset and a decent-ish PC (not a high end gaming one though), I'm thinking of trying to keep in touch with mates over conference calls and perhaps some sort of online games were we can set up a private 'room' of some sort together - anyone here done this or have any reccomendations?

One group of mates all has PC's, the other group is being awkward and one only has a Mac so we'll have to opt for browser based games only.

I'm assuming Skype is a good choice for conference calls?

I play online poker with mates - it's easy to set-up a 'home game' on Pokerstars and you can chat with each other.  Password to get.  Set your own buy-in amounts but of course Stars take a slice of the buy-in same as any online poker game.  I expect you're talking about a different type of games but might be an option.

Not at all - poker and other card/board games are an option rather than video games.

Everyone seems to be using Zoom or something else these days.

Still waiting on a couple of people to get verified for poker stars so would say don't expect to play instantly.  I have a old stars account from a long time ago... Logged in ok but realised later couldn't actually play without extra verification still waiting now.

Have played on a different site and a video game too (rocket league but may try wreckfest) using discord as the chat server... Apparently the quality and latency etc are very good and free to set up and host.  Interesting hearing about poker stars having that ability built in.

Any good board game places recommended would be welcome too?  The only game I have played in the past is ticket to ride online.  Played by myself against other people online was quite cathartic have a feeling if I played against friends I would win though so maybe not an option.  Ideally would like to play on the windows laptop too not Android.

Roughly, what percentage of the total pot do they take, over the course of a game?

It's fixed at 10% against the buy-in i.e. everyone buys in for say £5 and Stars take 50p so costs you £5.50.

I think you might be referring to cash games which have no fixed buy-in.  I don't know if they're available as a home game.

I haven't a clue how to play poker or I'd give it a go. Personally I am considering getting back into Age of Empires 2 online, but it used to be such a time sink for me, I must have wasted over a year of my life in total playing it back in the day. Anyone else a fan?

I used to play Stronghold Kingdoms on my laptop, free and keeps you busy. Its best to maybe spend a tenner at first and get a few card packs to get things speeded up.

The problem is it takes over your life.My partner threatened to leave me in the end,and my answer didnt go down well when i said but my castles are under attack.

Iv been looking for something else i can play on my laptop.

I play on Pokerstars quite a bit, if someone wants to do a Dosbods home game I'm up for it.

As long as we aren't playing 0.01/0.02 or some nonsense like that.

0.10/0.25 and up I'll play. Even up for Omaha if anyone prefers.

I'd be up for a NL holdem tourney, cash can get serious and long.  This way the time commitment is low (depending on numbers) and losses capped so nobody loses their house/car/children.

I'll start another thread so we're not hijacking this one.

I do. It was a thing of its time, like hula hoops, or furry dice.

Don't even bother. Some mates at work were obsessed with poker and kept trying to get me into it as well. One night we were in the social club and I said OK I would try it. Real cards I mean not online. I really put effort into trying to understand it but every time I thought Yes! think I've won at last there was always some reason why in fact I didn't win. "Yeah sorry under normal circumstances you'd be OK but he's got a Texas River flush because those two threes."

I think I'm the only person over the age of 10 who doesn't understand any of the card games in Casino Royale.  EG: why does a 4,5,6 of clubs beat a jack, queen and ace of diamonds?! The film  is more fun if you don't understand the outcome of the card games because you have no idea who just got buttfucked and have to gauge their reactions.

For all I know they aren't even playing poker, I think it might be baccarat at some point... Blissfully clueless about card games.
