Nikola Tesla

Recommended Posts

I listened to a very lengthy programme on R4 where somebody was advocating how Nikolai Tesla should be remembered because he was so much more imprtant than somebody Westinghouse.

It was rather lost on me as I knew very well who Tesla was and what he had achieved but had never actually heard of Westinghouse.

Apparently he is famous in the US.

George Westinghouse was an entrepreneur, setting up engineering companies both sides of the pond.

Westinghouse was a huge electrical engineering company in the US. Involved in all sorts of stuff over the past 100 plus years. I think it is basically CBS now - which has just remerged with Viacom - and is in enormous trouble.

Over the decades most of the real stuff - manufacturing, power plants, etc - had been sold off as being a luvvie in Hollywood mixing with stars is so much nicer than than those dirty engineers.

Fucking Genius end of who did his best work in Edwardian times before WW1, a lot of the work was not electrical as well as he patented some fluid dynamics related stuff.

A valve with no moving parts, plus a pump and gas turbine that used boundary layer drag.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_turbine

and you can buy the valve for £35 to impress your children (or not).

Didn't he supposedly invent a time travel machine?

Maybe, and believed he communicated with aliens, hence the BLAZE TV coverage. However he did some very interesting scientific work.

If you Google "famous engineers", Tesla comes up in a long list, right next to Elon Musk, who as far as I can tell is less of an engineer and more of a rich bullshitting twat. I think it's shameful how we've devalued the "engineer", because it inadvertently devalues the contributions of some truly great men.

Indeed a great man and certainly sussed out women! Even more remarkably when his insights are nearly 100 years old xD

This "new woman" was met with much indignation from Tesla, who felt that women were losing their femininity by trying to be in power. In an interview with the Galveston Daily News on 10 August 1924 he stated, "In place of the soft voiced, gentle woman of my reverent worship, has come the woman who thinks that her chief success in life lies in making herself as much as possible like man—in dress, voice and actions, in sports and achievements of every kind ... The tendency of women to push aside man, supplanting the old spirit of cooperation with him in all the affairs of life, is very disappointing to me"

Just a standard American view of the world, same as they think they invented television or won the space race ;)

It was very bizarre and sounded like someone was playing a parlour game of pretending that people didn't know someone really well known whilst someone of whom I had literally never heard was apparently so famous that they were obscuring Tesla.  They kept saying through the programme that Tesla had been forgotten and shouldn't be.

It was like someone doing a whole programme setting out the achievements of The Beatles and saying how they had been widely forgotten whereas everyone was very familiar with Tommy Steele and he had taken all the glory.

I think you have it muddled up. Tesla and Westinghouse worked together. George Westinghouse essentially bankrolled Nikolai Tesla to come up with inventions that he would then commercialise.

Thomas Edison was Tesla’s big rival.
