Books to learn about Economics?

What books would you recommend to a beginner trying to learn about the Economy?  Microeconomics being the main thing I'd like to understand.

I've had a look for books, but for the most part they're expensive (~£50) so need to make sure what I buy is useful.

Would prefer something that's accessible.  I've got a head for maths, but it's been a while since I've done much theory.

A few that have stood out to me so far:

Economics in One Lesson - H Hazlitt
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Economics-One-Lesson-H-Hazlitt/dp/0517548232

Microeconomics - Paul Krugman
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Microeconomics-Paul-Krugman/dp/131918202X

Essentials of Economics - Paul Krugman
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Essentials-Economics-Paul-Krugman/dp/1319221319

Are those any good or is there a better place to start?

Depends what you want to learn. I’m not sure how useful a textbook is - they’ll be fine for explaining the models and theories , but will invariably be heavy going and a lot of the models don’t work in practice - for example most economic models assume humans are rational, in theory that’s fine, in practice that’s rubbish - humans are often incredibly irrational.

Not being funny or tin foil hatted nutter but IMHO macroeconomics is a load of junk.

Id recommend reading:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Swan-Impact-Highly-Improbable/dp/0141034599

hes not as good as he thinks he is. But he has a point.

Most economics, at least the  in academia and practise is nothing more than group think.

That's fair enough.  I still like to get an understanding of it, but will treat it with scepticism.

I've been meaning to read a Taleb book for a while so will take a look at that too.

My virgin media childsafe blocked that, so it must be good.

Looks useful, will use it to see if the books are worth all that money.

I’ve read the Krugman textbook out of interest, when I was a student,  a long while back. Also, one by Stiglitz.

My memory is that They were an easy read.

Pretty straight forward. Probably Worth a flick through. But how true is it all?

Even the Crown Jewels: law of comparative advantage, and the babysitting co op.

i would suppose I would recommend reading one, but not taking it too seriously.

I’ve definitely learnt more on here.

i find myself agreeing with spygirl here.....most economists talk shite cos they think they can defy the laws of mathematics....after all that's what the 'money system' does too! :S

I've read a few Taleb too, at first I was like 'wow', now I've read a bit more of his 'one liners' and twitter titbits I'm a bit more 'meh'....I think he's become one of those soothsayers who thinks he can predict the future

What do you want to learn economics for? Just 'follow the money' and look at graphs :P

Edit: to add, you'll always find bias with economists ie Krugman, he's a fan of Keynes ideology ie print money to solve the world's woes....this doesn't work so he for example is a grade A cunt imo xD

There just seems to be one rule these days, central banks can & will print however much it takes to sustain the system.

Take a look in the thread called `The library` where Dosbodders have previewed and rated their best reads...I as a newbie (& definitely not a Mathematician) have put a lot of mine there.
