A thread to discuss the impact of ‘improvements’ made to the property stock (especially period houses) here in the UK! As mentioned in another thread.....

I offer the victorian terrace houses in the Railway Village in Swindon, which at one time had lovely & individual period features, now modernised internally behind their exterior facades.

Reminds me of the inside of a Mcdonalds restaurant (if restaurant is the right word).

So Bland :(

It's not so bad to modernise a house already gutted, but the developer treated them all equally in the Railway Village regardless of condition i.e. identikit fit-outs for maximum profit.

I’ve just put a new kitchen in a 50s house. Tried to stay true to it and chose a retro 50s/60s look.

All these f##king places will look as dated as a avacado coloured bath in a few years, what a waste of money and resources and Polish Petes hard work. Shit.

Funny you should say that, I’ve just taken one out. The plumber was well pissed off with the weight of it and getting it down the stairs. xD

Ah see, your plumber is either inexperianced (break it up in the bathroom and chuck it out bit by bit) or clever (future classic that avacado, get it in the van).

I never much liked the front porch extension my dad built on his ex council house. My school friends likened it to some sort of Chinese temple.

Bathroom is fair enough, those areas need to move with the times. Otherwise you may as well shit in the garden for the real experience. The rest is horrendous.

I've never quit understood front porches. All of that effort and money for a couple of square metres, the inconvenience of an extra door and a place to put a few pairs of shoes. I'd rather use the money for a lifetime subscription to Brazzers.

Agreed. Yes, the hall is more spacious for a coatrack and shoes but a downstairs rear extension incorporating a wc and maybe a shower cubicle round the back would have been more useful. Would you believe that after this was built my parents paid someone to artex the entire hallway? In 1990! Artex was going out of style then.

Silica gold. No point spending that money on it. The rattle can, orange stripe and fuzzy dice were plenty enough. The Escort would go on to fail it's MOT requiring over £200 worth of welding. I decided to scrap it.

OK I'm going to go against DOSBOD popular opinion on this.

Not all old buildings are worth preserving, and sometimes the interior is past any useful life.

I note the OP laments the removal of 'lovely & individual period features', and I don't argue with that sentiment if that is the case.

But sometimes only the exterior is worth preserving, perhaps on it's own merit, or to preserve surrounding area.

inadequate thermal insulation, poor lighting, impractical rooms, can mean the only realistic choice is modernisation or demolition.

So if it is modernised, that should be judged on taste and quality of construction. Taste is of course subjective.

In practice, I don't object to gutting a commonplace building and modernising the interior, while preserving the exterior or at least the facade to fit in to the existing area.

We sometimes imagine that all old buildings were wonderful and worth preserving, but that is because we forget that the worst of them have been pulled down or fallen down.

I agree some buildings are not (practically) worth saving, after all I am in the construction trade. The Mechanics' Institute just around the corner from the Railway village in Swindon is probably one, sure it's doable but could the building generate the revenue to warrant, and maintain, any upkeep is always the main question.

I have about 20 years of carpentry, heritage, renovation/restoration/preservation and managerial experience, so I'd like to think that I know a little bit about what's worth keeping ;)
