OK I'm going to go against DOSBOD popular opinion on this.

Not all old buildings are worth preserving, and sometimes the interior is past any useful life.

I note the OP laments the removal of 'lovely & individual period features', and I don't argue with that sentiment if that is the case.

But sometimes only the exterior is worth preserving, perhaps on it's own merit, or to preserve surrounding area.

inadequate thermal insulation, poor lighting, impractical rooms, can mean the only realistic choice is modernisation or demolition.

So if it is modernised, that should be judged on taste and quality of construction. Taste is of course subjective.

In practice, I don't object to gutting a commonplace building and modernising the interior, while preserving the exterior or at least the facade to fit in to the existing area.

We sometimes imagine that all old buildings were wonderful and worth preserving, but that is because we forget that the worst of them have been pulled down or fallen down.

When I was younger I used to love old country houes. Now I know how much they cost to keep,I'd rather not.

I once heard a toff say 'you don't own a country hosue, they wn you'.Sums it up.

Lot of old buildigns too expensive tor epair

That was super cheers Maffo.

You still working for a big builder.I f=remember you from ToSI think.

:)

I'm no longer working for a large builder, I did a trial for Crest Nicholson which are (supposedly) the better part of Persimmon Homes. It was an awful experience, the quality is not there in the materials and it's a never ending headache dealing with pissed off buyers (the poor souls). I stick to smaller scale, mostly specialised commercial work these days as I'm a freelance money chaser.

Sure, the work is more visually impressive with bespoke housing, like one offs and small developments etc, which I do enjoy and look great in the photos! But,  as with most enjoyable jobs, the pay isn't always so good.

I used to specialise putting places back to how they should be when i was on the tools, oak veneer ply & cedar were my most used materials.

I quite like that one Sugarlips. At least it's different, nothing like that in the UK anyway. :/

That godawful Japanese faux temple thing by the River Thames that someone posted last year is probably the worst one. I think it was posted by @TheBlueCat
