Lots of companies bought them for home working back in March; I think my co. bought twenty in one go which is more than they would usually buy all year.

The warehouses would have been emptied.

That is it. My sister will be going back to work soon, from home, and needs a laptop. Her employer will not be providing it.

There are loads of AMD Ryzen laptop deals on hotukdeals.

All the company laptops are intel but shipped with 4gb of ram. These worked ok until the zoom, teams and dual display requirements, share point came along. As in every company I have worked in the machines have to be upgraded with more ram. Although one place they  bought loads of small Lenovo i3 intel things which were absolute dire. They were lightweight and booted quickly though. But could not run multiple programs!

I would have expected any dosbod worthy of the name to only ever buy ex corporate laptops off ebay. Buying new would be pure extravagance.

Indeed, all family laptops are currently second hand, some excellent bargains over the last couple of years, not so much since Covid tho, prices have shot up, same as with bikes.

Yep, Lenovo Thinkpad T series (the defacto best business grade laptop for price/performance going all the way back to when it was owned by IBM) usually a good buy refurb with warranty after companies recycle them when the tax write-off has been used up.

I expect like company cars they buy in volume to get a discount so makes sense for them to not hang onto them for more than a few years.

Especially when performance improvements like SSD started becoming ubiquitous, as it's the single biggest improvement (from HDD) one can make to speed up their laptop or computer once 4 to 8gb ram is installed.

I do wonder if Lenovo may suffer from the backlash against China so may stock up on a couple more laptops as the newer versions become available refurb at reasonable prices.

These are good because they are solid. They may have extra memory holes for upgrades. Choose your model carefully. I know they are all Chinese, but these are made well.

Indeed some right junk on Ebay, the sort of 1970s/80s 3-speed bikes or Halfords clunkers made of scaffolding poles that nobody wanted and which sold for about £30 last year are now going for £60-£70.

Macbook pros haven't altered much

I bought a verly little used one on ebay a few months ago for a good price and the prices are similar today. Might be less demand for Apple or less margin to increase the price as they are more expensive to statt with, however.

Aye, each iteration they seem to mess about with some part of the design and rarely for the better. Either keyboard changes (e.g. small enter key) or to the trackpad (zones instead of physical buttons.

IBM got the design right long ago so no need to piss about with it. Though I've never got on with the red 'clit', maybe women are more used to fiddling with it as apparently it's there for touch typists, i.e. secretaries.

I love the keyboard on my X220.  They X230 keyboard is horrible in comparison.  I'm wondering if I need to buy a lifetime supply of X220s.

My work laptop is absolutely FUBAR. Supposed to be replaced every 3 years, but Covid prevented it back in April.

The IT department keep putting more and more stuff on and it's pretty much ground to a halt this morning.

Switched it on, logged on, put the bin out, made a cuppa, went back upstairs and it's still grinding away. Then Outlook and Teams didn't open right so I've had to shut it down and start again. Teams properly fucked my laptop.

I'd happily buy my work laptop at 3 years old, it's well specced, keyboard and trackpad are basically unused and I look after it almost like it was my own.

Trouble is, it's luck of the draw. You might not get mine, you might get the one that was assigned to Dave, 2 desks over. You're going to want to wash it in Dettol.

Many of the models seem to be somewhat moddable. Seems a popular activity with the folks on the Lenovo reddit forum. You may be able to upgrade the X230 laptop's keyboard to the X220's. xD

I was tempted to upgrade the touchpad on mine but after seeing the walkthrough on youtube it's too much of a faff seeing as I use a usb mouse most of the time.

On the other hand you may get a souped up version. A client gave me an encrypted Thinkpad for some work to access their network via VPN and I had it so long I ended up upgrading the HDD to SSD, banged in a second SSD via the m.2 expansion slot and maxed out the ram.

Was tempted to revert it before I handed it back (partly in case they discovered the mods) but the price of the parts weren't worth worrying about and I was too lazy, so if they didn't check the actual spec against the build spec before shipping it off for refurbing then someone may have got an above normal version of that Thinkpad.
