I see that Hancock is considering increasing the number of places to study medicine.

It is normally a secret that numbers are limited for medicine -- but here it is, in black and white:

The government is "absolutely looking at" lifting the cap on the number of places to study medicine, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said.

The number of students studying to be doctors is regulated because of the cost and for NHS workforce planning.

For some reason no-one seems to be saying 'hold on -- for all these years we've heard stories of hard working doctors and insufficient GPs -- but they've been rationing places!  Can we fire the people in charge of NHS workforce planning and get someone competent'.

And for those who say it's an international thing -- how come the vast majority of NHS medics from overseas come from 'poor' countries like India and anywhere in Africa (where they don't have sufficient medics themselves), rather than from rich countries like western EU and the USA?

Good, the sooner the restriction is lifted the better. Drop the entry requirements, establish some new medical schools (or pay for training for UK kids abroad) and start to get some competition into the GP market.

The "cost" is such a stupid reason for not training them.

What is the cost of the hundreds of thousands of students who do crap degrees and so will inevitably never repay a penny of their £60k student loan?

If you are going to have a cap on student numbers then you do not apply it selectively to one of the few degrees which is actually necessary in order to start on the job (as opposed to being an arbitrary requirement as is the case for the police force).

You apply it to overall student numbers.

Then for every additional thousand doctors trained you have a thousand less Gender Studies unemployables.

Win win.

The best part is it`s GP`s and the like which vote on how many places there should be and it was them that voted to limit them in the first place

They don`t want to put downward pressure on their own wages
