German Lecturer says that.

Higher education in the UK is morally bankrupt. I’m taking my family and my research millions, and I’m off

So whats this kraut cunt researching then thats so vital for the UK?  A major development in solar powe o rFusion? A new wonder treatment to cure cancer or some other incurable disease.  Or perhaps plant research to improve yields and make us self sufficient?

No - he has a research grant

I was awarded a €10m collaborative grant from the European Research Council to study the European “common good” with partners in Berlin, Sofia and Budapest.

So basically 10 mill Euro's of public money to fawn about how fantastic the EU is.

Bye bye Ulf - don't let the door handle hit you on the way out.

Morally bankrupt?  I wonder how long he has worked in it and how long it took him to realise this little fact.

Researchers all worry about where they will get funding from when the European grants stop.

I don't think they realise that if all the money we channelled into European research was given directly to STFC / MRC etc there would be a lot more grant money floating around than there is today.

Aren’t these people meant to be very bright?   How come they don’t realise that it isn’t free money, just that some of the slush fund Paid gets redirected back.
idiots. Should they really be in charge of anything?

I assume that is the academic make work version of digging a big hole and filling it in again.

A C grayling (AKA Harold Shipman) argues otherwise

There's bright and bright.

Most are undoubtedly experts in their field..  but that doesn't necessarily mean they have much worldly experience outside of that.  Nothing wrong with that per se.

Maybe not but we also lost out on the cod war

And rightly so. For exactly the same reason we want European boats out of our waters the Icelanders wanted us out of theirs.

Whenever Remoaners tell me fish don't recognise boundaries I reply tell that to the icelanders and Norwegians who have the 2nd and 1st biggest fish catches in Europe from their waters.

Exactly. So why is Britain being treated differently?  Oh yeah, because our government is in reality a bunch of globalist shills whose only purpose is to line their own pockets. Quisling traitors one and all.

I suspect the fact that he has a seven year old son had something to do with it.

Given a choice of schools for my son of:

A. Free, unenriched German school with high Prussian System standards;
B. Extremely expensive British public school with good standards but earning the approbation of socialist colleagues, or
B. Grange Hill with the approval of colleagues but the downside of enrichment and stabbings

I think I'd choose the Fatherland every time.

Everything I’ve heard about EU grants is that they are a bureaucratic nightmare to get and maintain. I’m sure there are some academics on here who can tell us more about that.

Would be amusing if the Budapest university in this funding was the Soros one (who literally took his university and left).

Didn’t his native country (can’t remember which one) tell him to fuck off when he tried to open his own university there?

Do you think the guardian has just blocked any comments pointing all this out, or has genuinely nobody on there gone through the thought process that £10m of taxpayers money (likely the whole annual tax take from 1000 proper workers) has been removed and given to some loyal EUCCP member to declare that (social) science confirms the EU is great?

This is exactly why people voted to leave. If we contributed 20% of EU funds that's £2m saved right there.

This is the way all EU funding works.

  • We have a pile of money.  We could spend it on anything we wanted to, but
  • Instead we give it to Brussels.
  • They then decide what they want to spend it on, with the proviso that most of it has to be spent in the UK.

I don't understand why people can't see it would be beneficial to cut out the middleman.

Hope you two are prepared for the UK fishermen to be sold down the river. It's as inevitable as an advancing tide. Boris and co will listen to the bankers and industrialists, not the fishermen and their supporters, as UK governments always have. Just a matter of when. My guess would be in November/December.

Eh?  Happened 20 years ago. My home fishing port has been turned into a free amusement park for smoggies. He real end was signalled about five years ago when they shut down the ice plant. No trawlers fishing, no need for ice.

Yeah but in theory a lot of rights would return with Brexit, I think. But they'll be sold again,

To be fair most Brits won't eat fish unless it's covered in breadcrumbs/batter and deep fried, so whoever has the right to catch them in the UK waters, they mostly won't end up on UK plates.

I read somewhere yesterday about my local mp moaning on about the no deal would destroy those who caught lobsters as they are mainly shipped abroad (in tanks apparently, you learn something every day). What?  Why am I paying through the nose for a lobster so that most of it can be shipped abroad?  Something rotten in the state of Denmark i think.
