Peace talks in Afghanistan

Lots of news stories on it.

Baradar, meanwhile, repeated his group's demand for the country to adopt an "Islamic system".

"We want Afghanistan to be an independent, developed country, and it should have a form of Islamic system, where all its citizens see themselves reflected."

Can you have both?

Blowing up your own skyscrapers so that you can go in and manipulate gas, opium, cobalt and lithium, only to get nothing out of it after 20 years but debt, whilst your principal enemies (Russia/China) go in and start cutting economic deals at a cost of nothing to themselves.

If there's a worse disaster in the 21st century by a world power, I'll be shocked.

This film was excellent.

Well worth watching.

That's not what I remember of it.  IIRC, the movie tells us that America ruined the Soviet adventure in Afghanistan through Stinger deliveries.  The Politburo had already made the decision to leave before the first Stinger delivery.

Sir Rodric Braithwaite's book (Afghansty) pretty much debunks that stuff.  The exit strategy was in place early 1986 IIRC.  It's a good book and shows the difference in strategies between the USSR and NATO, the former using the carrot and the stick, the latter just gratuitously carpet bombing suspected targets.

The Soviets were way better.  In fact, the Russians have demonstrated excellent force application in Syria too.  They know when to escalate and when to quit.  Ukraine too, their 'trigger discipline' has been very impressive, they would've flattened Ukraine after those Russians were burned alive, but holding back with limited action in the East has proven far more intelligent.  They're good at chess.

The US have proved to be a lousy western hegemonic power replacement for the British Empire. The fuck up in Vietnam was almost entirely of their own making, particularly Kennedy’s agreement to the toppling and ultimate killing of Ngo Dinh Diem in 1963. The Communists in the North could not believe that their opponents would be so stupid

The consequences of the 1 November coup d'état will be contrary to the calculations of the US imperialists ... Diệm was one of the strongest individuals resisting the people and Communism. Everything that could be done in an attempt to crush the revolution was carried out by Diệm. Diệm was one of the most competent lackeys of the US imperialists  ... Among the anti-Communists in South Vietnam or exiled in other countries, no one has sufficient political assets and abilities to cause others to obey. Therefore, the lackey administration cannot be stabilized. The coup d'état on 1 November 1963 will not be the last.[149]The consequences of the 1 November coup d'état will be contrary to the calculations of the US imperialists ... They have been busily fucking up everywhere else ever since aided by spineless lackeys like Tony Blair. No doubt if Trump loses in November they will be eager to return to their historic mission of screwing up the rest of the planet soon.
