It is a shame he hasn't started a nationalised company, or invested in British companies to do this. Instead we've got Siemens turbines and EDF. I hope the French haven't put a backdoor 'off switch' in.

Maggies plan. Sell off the nasty nationalised industries to the French and German nationalised insustries, and buy Russian gas.

It's peanuts.

Proposed spending on this: £160m

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54421489

That is 0.15% of HS2: £106bn

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16473296

And 0.08% of UK Covid spending so far: £200bn

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-8806387/UK-fix-budget-hole-COVID-19-crisis--Sunak.html

Big deal.

This.

The UK should be world leaders in wind turbine production and installation. No excuse for getting in foreign companies for this.

It was probably discussed at Cobla's last meeting.

It's just about feasible Prime Minister if we use Covid to force people to stay indoors and close all the cinemas, theatres, pubs, gyms, sporting grounds and shops etc.  For a laugh we could still say they should be going to the cinema.  We could still keep immigration at current or even higher levels to support our house prices.  You know it makes sense.

Agreed in theory, but using a car comparison - if you were going to have to rely on a car, far out in the North Sea (let's say on an island so it makes more sense) a long way from easy maintenance, would you want that car to be a Toyota, or a British car?

Maybe they could have started a British turbine company with ex-Toyota people running the quality control. Obviously Brit companies can do top quality reliable engineering or there'd be no such thing as Rolls-Royce aero engines.

Either way those turbines out at Dogger Bank have to be shit-hot good and mega-reliable for many years under very nasty conditions, or they'll end up costing (more of) a fortune.

We should have had that vision when British Leyland closed down @swiss_democracy_for_alland we lost the UK car industry. Should have pushed hard on tidal and wind engineering, re-tooled and re-skilled. Decades lost.

But then and until the mid 2000s the vision was we could import gas by ship form China

Looking at 2 of the latest major projects to come out of Rolls Royce, Im not sure thatthe rot hasnt set in there as well.

By this I mean the Trent 1000 which sufferered a catastrophic engine failure on the Qantas A380 a few years ago and the Boeing Dreamliner engine fiasco.

Yes, as they are hard to get to, unlike land based ones.

Anyway, as to the title, Boris will create the biggest recession I will be able to remember.

He's already done that, and is working diligently on making it a lot worse. The public debt finances will look like Greece's when he's done, though Italy will provide a distraction as they had a 50%-of-GDP headstart on  the UK at the beginning of Covid.
