Coronavirus and gender: More chores for women set back gains in equality

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-55016842

Just 25? Back to 1995??

Not 5, 10 or 50???

The coronavirus pandemic could wipe out 25 years of increasing gender equality, new global data from UN Women suggests.

Women are doing significantly more domestic chores and family care, because of the impact of the pandemic.

"Everything we worked for, that has taken 25 years, could be lost in a year," says UN Women Deputy Executive Director Anita Bhatia.

Employment and education opportunities could be lost, and women may suffer from poorer mental and physical health.

The care burden poses a "real risk of reverting to 1950s gender stereotypes", Ms Bhatia says.

Even before the pandemic, it was estimated women were doing about three quarters of the 16 billion hours of unpaid work that are done each day around the world.

In other words, before coronavirus, for every one hour of unpaid work done by men, three hours was done by women. Now that figure is higher.

And howmay hours of paid work does the man do, compared to the woman?

1950s is 70 year not 25.

The presumption that all women should aspire to highly paid & successful careers is a daft a left wing thing as assuming all men should do the same by the right.

In reality a lot of women would rather not thankyou given the choice of cleaning the bogs in an office block or being a 'kept woman' and cleaning their own.

Its all ideological nastiness.

If more women had bought bitcoin they would have emancipated themselves from housework forever. Maids are cheap in bitcoin terms.

It's their own fault.

Well the french maid at the brothel charges 50 quid for 30 minutes I’d not say that’s cheap or poorly paid.she can’t code however

Well, Anita .... maybe some women (and men) would rather be looking after their family than being a slave to some coporation?

Is that a bad thing?

What's so bad about doing house chores and looking after your family?

My wife lost her job and has decided to be a housewife for a while as it would be difficult to get a job she would enjoy at the moment. Middle class women tend to regard their job as a lifestyle affectation, rather than economic necessity. In times of economic stress they just decide to be housewives rather than stack shelves at Tesco or work the tills at McDonalds.

Presumably the equation is -- during Covid there's been massive impact on paid work, and (largely) men have become less employed.  But the amount of housework and caring remains the same.

So, the impact of Covid that we're going to focus on isn't that men lose their jobs and thus have less paid work, but rather that women haven't also had proportionally less housework and caring to do.

That is such a absurd twisted logic that I don't know what to think.

And slim but curvy in all the right places.

Might struggle with that nowadays.all this hard manual work women do nowadays has made most of them fat.they should go back to the 50s the housework and cooking and gossiping over the fence was far kinder to women’s figures.
