Explosion at avonmouth waterworks. Looks nasty.

Recommended Posts

as ever the BBC reporters are clueless, its a tank, a big storage tank not a warehouse.

The tank is part of the waterworks and if the tank was empty or unused it will have air in it.

Unvented tanks will have other gasses building up in them depending on what that tank is doing.

Those gasses could include flammable ones like methane but there are others.

Joe comes along with a cutting torch or grinder for example, goes onto the roof and decides to cut a hole in it.

The mixed gasses air and whatever at the LEL* then decide the rest is history.

Yep. Bbc definitely reporting it as a waterworks plant.  Fucking useless bastards. Get more accurate and informed information on here any day of the week.

Bloody hell. No sign of anything after that. Nothing. They were blown well away from the explosion.

There was an incident at Hickson and Welch in the 90s where they were cleaning out a still bottom on a Nitrotoluene plant.

Similar size and shape tank only filled with large quantities of poly Nitrotoluenes, a by product of the process.

Picture a man on a scaffold raking these solids out into a skip below. A slight spark ignited what turned out similar to the space shuttle solid rocket booster.

Yes very probable. Anyone working with these tools needs to be careful - the Beirut explosion is another example.
