I thought this year might be interesting. I always felt that the biggest problem with spending NYE on your own was the (mistaken) impression that that the rest of the world was out having a ball.

Personally I’m dreading 2021.

Normally, for many years now being realistic, on New Year’s Eve I’m thinking of new places to go, new things to do, what can I do to improve my life and I’m generally feeling upbeat.

I can’t ever remember any New Year’s Eve when I felt so despondent.

:(.

I always thought of NYE as total meme of an event but I am sorry you feel like that tonight

They've extended furlough to the end of April.. It'll most likely get extended again.. They'll be some who have been furloughed for over a year - would seem nice to certain folk...but for me, I'd be climbing the walls..

After 12 months of furlough, a large number will be effectively useless.

And the rest won't have a job anyway.

The trouble is the Taxman will expect those who are still in work to adopt them.

It’s just my personal thoughts this evening. For many years I haven’t been at a party or anything like that on New Year’s Eve. I’ll survive!

How many other folk who have been getting along ok in life are feeling like I am this evening? Going to pub, mass events, family/friend parties etc. It’s not a “class” thing either, in my opinion.

I’d guess plenty in the mass population because socialising is currently disallowed. Doesn’t matter if you’re a lone soldier, have a good spouse, in a close family, have lots of close friends, single but open to doing things available depending on circumstances etc.

Personally always hated new year's eve. The last one I saw in was 2000, and before that probably 1985.

Normally love new year's Day, but I'm feeling similar to you about what's ahead . Take care of yourself and let's hope spring helps.

@Van Lady This is the first time since I was 15 I haven't gone out/done something...but I never thought of it as new beginning or anything xD It feels weird but no weirder than the rest of the year.  It's felt like living in an episode of The Twilight Zone crossed with Invasion of the Bodysnatchers for nearly a year now.

At least this year you know they aren't.

Probably the one night of the year that's been good in some ways for people's mental health, in that regard!

I’ve known for many years that the rest of the world isn’t out having a ball on any day.

It’s just life. Personally I’d have preferred to have met and been living with a suitable life partner. I’m a lone soldier. That’s how it’s turned out for me.

Personally I’m happy my daughter has moved in with a really nice man this year. Recently the daughter of a local landlord over the road has obviously got a new boyfriend. Great, I’m happy for them. Fireworks went off down the road, I don’t like them but each to their own.

To be honest I felt a dig in your post, of course I could be wrong, that you think I wish misery on all. I really don’t.

On Xmas day my ex father in law died. Honestly I don’t care. However I do feel empathy for my ex mother in law in her early 80’s. She’s well off but not outgoing. No friends or acquaintances and sons living miles away. She is going to really struggle having never lived alone in life.

Honestly there was no dig.

I was actually wearing my heart on my sleeve as I have spent some on my own, and that was how I felt.

I do, however, think next year will be better than you do. After months of blandness, every freedom we get, every scent we smell and every view we see will maybe that little bit sweeter.

We have had so much taken away, and we must enjoy it even more when we get it back.

I’m a bit twitchy this evening and probably a bit hypersensitive regarding life in general for us ordinary folk.

I really hope you’re right that 2021 will be better.

Really hope so for many folk in a variety of circumstances.

I was out earlier so not too fussed about NYE and it being just me and the cat. Bit of catch-up TV and some beer and chocolate.

Do have a sense of foreboding about 2021, as the surreal 2020 refuses to let go and this humanity-destroying saga based on lies and deceit continues.

Brexit delivered - apparently! We'll see. The USA about to fall to Globalist Marxists - maybe?

Hold on for the ride, be true to yourself as much as you can.

Without hope what have we got?

I'm at a loss to find out where this figure of 900 odd deaths has appeared from.

Is it the 7-day rolling 'average' ... and that death number is plucked out of their arses by attaching 'someone who's tested covid-19 positive in the last 28 days' .... so essentially it's a completely and utterly meaningless numbers.  A number that can be manipulated for any purpose.

Yet it's a headline figure bandied about

900 deaths!

OMG - 900 in one day! everyone thinks

Until you read the small print in font size -10 million.

... 530k people die annually in this country, 130 odd per day

... the equivalent of a jump jet crashing every couple of days!!!!! JUST FROM ALL CAUSE MORTALITY!!!!!

It's just so much bullshit scaremongering I'm just immune to it all.   I automatically disbelieve anything I am told.

All the folk made redundant during the furlough pause must be pissed. They could have been laid off in April instead.

You can see it here: https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths

  • the '900' number is death by date reported.   Ie, the clerical staff had Christmas off, so they reported fewer, and now they've caught up.
  • If you look at the by date of death figures you can see that it is consistent across the Christmas period at about mid to high 400's.

It is a bit weird going by date reported -- they might as well not bother using/reporting that data as it is intrinsically noisy, whereas the by date of death is consistent albeit there's a potential delay of a few days while the figures come through.

The only reason I can think of for the news picking up on the almost 1,000' is that it is a considerably more sensationalist and helps deliver agendas.  [They'll probably do it again on Monday/Tuesday.]
