BBC Headline: Covid: 2020 saw most excess deaths since World War Two

The actual age standardised data:

06-F6-DE7-F-4-C43-4483-BCAF-35-F6-D0-FCD

There’s scraping the barrel..  then there’s outright fear-mongering.

Age standardised data is the worst since 2009.  Wow.  And that’s despite the fact that some of those will have been caused by the governments reaction to Covid rather than Covid itself.

The average age of death in WW2 was 26.

The average age of death “with Covid”  in 2020 was 82.4

Completely comparable.

Well that’s me satisfied Mr Matt Hancock and Mr BBC..   that totally justifies your lockdowns.   You utter ******’s.

I haven't looked at the data for a while, but when I saw the headline I did think that there must have been a hell of an uptick based on excess deaths the last time I looked.

How are they justifying the headline?

I thought the short piece on R4 about this was rather funny.

Covid deaths are worst since 1945, when we were at war.  When you adjust for population it is still the worst since 2008 -- 10 years of improvements lost just like that.

Worst since 2008 -- WTF are we doing?

They aren’t,  it’s just technically the non-standardised data goes up every year anyway due to increasing population and other factors..  and WW2 is the last time we had a major anomaly to spike the data.

I will repeat myself from earlier.

They are playing numbers again and most people will grab the wrong end of the stick with that one as they don’t understand y-o-y and will just assume 'biggest number f deaths since WW2'.

January 1940 was a quiet period but most people think WW2 was carnage every day.

They are comparing first week of Jan 1940 with first week of Jan 2021 and somebody has worked very hard to come up with that propaganda wheeze.

Even more utterly disgraceful when you put numbers to it.

Lets look at last year vs this year

Total deaths registered W/E 3rd Jan 2020 = 12,254

Total deaths registered W/E 1st Jan 2021 = 10,069

I shall spin it BBC style

BBC - 21.7% more people died during COVID than WW2

That's not real reporting. They are being told to write it.

I agree 100%.

But who tells our resident DOSBODS "influencers" to copy and paste it on here...?

You know, all those popular posters who claim they never use the BBC...

My wife would if she saw it on the "news".

And I would estimate at least 40% of the people I know would also not question it - because it was on the telly, so it must be true...

There is a thing doing the rounds that people believe that 7% of the UK population have died.

It's clearly aimed at the older population

The UK regions are running a moderate excess ofdeaths.

https://www.euromomo.eu/graphs-and-maps/

Unless the deaths go up massively, we are going to go back to averages deaths for time of year.

This des not mean the hospitals are not overloaded with people on ICUs.

The claims of 'highest excess deaths' are nuts.

They dont take into account the increase of population,. which is the over 70s.

The 2-3x increase in NHS spending since ~2004 has just kept a load of OAPs doddering around for 2 or 3 years extra 'life' (more not letting them die) , where they are no use to anyone and a burden on both the state and their family.

Pissing money, just so a bad flu yeas puts 1000s in hospital, increasing the money wasted on them even more.

A work of fiction all round.

There has been no proper counting in and counting out of the population. Worse unknown levels of illegal entry.

Comparison of rates per 100K for any dates going back any significant period  is pretty much meaningless.

Here's the full year 2020.  Worst since 2003.

It's a great chart,  but I don't even know what it really means.

Everyone dies..  without exception,  so really the only factors of interest should be quality of life,  and length of life.

We know that quality of life for many has been badly impacted in 2020,  so AFAIC we should be looking to the change in life expectancy in 2020 / 2021 for the justification for that..

I don't think that data's available yet.
