Met chief: We will continue ‘disproportionate’ stop-and-search

The Met will continue to carry out “disproportionate” stop and searches of young black Londoners in an attempt to save lives, Scotland Yard’s second most senior officer warned today as he hit out against claims of discrimination.

Deputy Commissioner Sir Stephen House said officers were paid to use their brains and needed to focus “where the problem lies”.

That meant they would inevitably end up with an ethnic imbalance in stop and search because “young black men are dying on the streets of London and are being stabbed on the streets of London and, candidly, are also stabbing on the streets of London.”

He said the result was that “of course our stopping and searching is disproportionate” and that it was also “nonsense” to think that the majority of ethnic Londoners subjected to such checks felt they had been badly treated.

His robust defence of the Met’s approach came during an interview in which he also disclosed that around 300 knives a month were being seized during searches.

It follows the fatal stabbing of two London teenagers in the past fortnight, including the killing of 15-year-old Romario Opia in Archway, which have cast a cloud over the Met’s success in reducing the number of teen killings last year to 15. That was 11 fewer than the 2019 tally of 26.

Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick has emphasised her belief that stop and search is a vital tool in preventing crime but the force has come under attack from critics after a series of high-profile incidents shown on social media including the searching of Team GB sprinter Bianca Williams and her partner Ricardo dos Santos.

But Sir Stephen said such incidents gave a distorted impression with research showing that most of those stopped and searched, including two thirds of black and Asian Londoners, felt that they were treated politely and with respect.

300 per month. Are they all getting convicted?

Yep, he’ll be gone by the end of Feb.

I hadn't thought of that aspect, I should have done. We had this in Nottingham twenty years ago.

US-style gun law comes to Britain

Nottingham police on armed foot patrol after rise in shootings

At the start of their shifts the police officers insert their Walther P990 pistols into the holsters on their hips and, always operating in pairs with armed back-up vehicles close at hand, begin to patrol the two trouble-hit estates.

I believe the guy who instigated it was gone within the year.

It was hilarious that some BLM bint (the one that since been disowned) was claiming that "3 out of 4" who were searched had no knife on them and therefore it was harassment.

A 25% hit rate is surely spectacular successful targeting -  I mean what hit rate would they get if they searched completely randomly ? 1% 0.1% ?.

I just don't understand the point of judging by the 'input', ie, proportion stopped.

Surely there's only ever value in judging by the 'output;, ie, proportion found to be committing a crime.

I've no idea whether this 'output' shows a racial bias, because they don't seem to publicise these figures, but, as you say, if they've got a 25% hit rate then they're definitely doing something right.

as the thugs are likely to have been affected by structural racism shouldn't they be compensated, this would also make them more amenable to the searches. The innocent would get a lesser amount.

No bites?

That is unbelievable. I know they prob not targeting random blacks but those acting or looking dodgy but even if you did same with whites would only be 1pc if that
