Trappistan

It has been called Trappistan, the Islamic state on the edge of Paris. It has come into the news recently because philosophy professor Didier Lemaire claims to have received death threats from Islamists just a few weeks after another philosphy professor, Samuel Paty, was beheaded in St Quentin. Lemaire has attracted the wrath of extremists after he denounced the influence Islamists have on the youth in his school. Lemaire has been under police protection but the local Prefect says he is aiding the extreme right and has brought the problems on himself by speaking out and has ruined work by the state to calm the situation in Trappes. Lemaire has also been denounced by the mayor of Trappes Ali Rabeh who says his claims are "lies!". His says the threats are "not serious".

The French education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer  and Marlène Schiappa (deputy interior minister) have backed Lemaire saying schools should be a place of neutrality and not a political football of Ali Rabeh. The issue has also divided the French left between the mainstream "republican" socialists and La France insoumise, a quasi islamist extreme left wing party led by blowhard Jean-Luc Melenchon. It should be noted that Melenchon scored nearly 20% in the last Presidential elections first round whereas the mainstream socialist party trailed in at 6%.

In any case after 20 years of teaching in Trappistan Didier Lemaire has been moved to a non teaching post outside the area. It seems France's famous "reconquest" of its lost territories has suffered another blow.

Like the hilarious claim that the failed 21/7 attacks were merely a bit of performance art by members of the trans community.

That's a weird one, twice in that short article they mention Golders Green in London....

This whole issue has become a political football. We are clearly in the pre presidential election phase where the ruling LREM wants to show it is tough on immigration and extreme islam to compete with Le Pen's RN party so any incident such as this is blown up in a media cacophony.

I also wonder whether the teacher had got fed up teaching in Trappes and it is a good way out of a difficult area.

Trappes in 70% muslim out of a population of 32,000 with high unemployment.
