Hello-hoolay, there's a plice to pay, to the Eton lifles, Eton lifles
Hello-hoolay, I'd prefer the plague, to the Eton lifles, Eton lifles

Ahh, the Lugger fields of UK public schools.....

Stuffed full of party cadres and far left Pols.

Tom Brown's Reducation Camp?

Maybe Labour will start filling with more public school boys?

Your post made me look up the lyrics to Eton Rifles as I've never actually been able to decipher a word that comes out of Paul Weller's mouth.  Which is a shame as when you find out WTF he is saying in his songs, most of the time it's worth hearing.

When you went to see The Jam live nobody could hear anything after the flash bomb at the end of 'A' Bomb In Wardour Street.

" Where the streets are paved with blood
With cataclysmic overtones
Fear and hate linger in the air
A strictly no-go deadly zone
I don't know what I'm doing here
'Cause it's not my scene at all
There's an A-bomb in Wardour Street
They've called in the army
They've called in the police too
I'm stranded on the vortex floor
My head's been kicked in
And blood's started to pour
Through the haze I can see my girl
15 geezers got her pinned to the door
I try to reach her but fall back to the floor
A-bomb in Wardour Street
It's blown up the West End
Now it's spreading through the city
A-bomb in Wardour Street
It's blown up the city
Now it's spreading through the country
Law and order take a turn for the worst
In the shape of a size 10 boot
Rape and murder throughout the land
And they tell you that you're still a free man
If this is freedom I don't understand
'Cause it seems like madness to me
A-bomb in Wardour Street, hate bomb
Hate bomb, hate bomb, hate bomb
A Philistine nation of degradation
And hate and war, there must be more
It's doctor Martin's A P O C A L Y P S E
Apocalypse! "

At the risk of tripping into a misheard lyrics thread absolutely.

I sometimes hear a better quality song on the radio thirty years later and go "oh, so that's what he's saying".

I was going to use the example of Anarchy in the UK as covered by Megadeath who deliberately changed some of the lyrics to say USA rather than UK but got others wrong, and why would you not check that?, though in doing so I've realised that I was mishearing "passers by" as "pass the pint".  Every day's a school day.

  • I wanna destroy the passers by
  • I want to destroy, possibly
  • I use the N.M.E
  • I use the enemy
