Long time lurking

I`m sure Kate Bush would fit in there somewhere

And also Avril Lavigne for more testosterone driven favourites

Not perhaps the strongest of voices like the ones I picked above, but a mention for Italy's Elisa - she performs this so well and it's a fantastic song.

Not that fond of Celine Dion generally, but she’s done a couple of excellent versions of existing songs as well as her own stuff and is good at the emotional stuff - check out the key change in this at about 3 min, not many could do better.

Ottilie Patterson. Shame she had to retire early due to ill health.

Eddie Reader. A voice that can soar to the heavens.

Cilla Black. The finest female vocalist that England ever produced.

Good call on Cilla, that annoying dating show had caused me to forget what she was really good at. Her speaking voice was also annoying, which seems odd when you see how well she could sing with the same voice box.

She was an utter cunt, though.

Dolly Parton - amazing songwriter and performer.

Kate Bush - superb.

Poly Styrene - utterly unique and brilliant.  And as has been said the least likely front person of any group, male or female, ever.  Small, quiet, shy, plain, and with braces on her teeth.

And in this extract from her wiki imagine doing this aged 15 in 1972; no mobile phones then.

Now imagine doing it as a small mixed race teenage girl.

As a teenager, Styrene was a hippie. When she was 15 she ran away from home with £3 in her pocket, and hitchhiked from one music festival to another, staying at hippie crash pads. Thinking of this as a challenge to survive, her adventure ended when she stepped on a rusty nail while bathing in a stream and had to be treated for septicaemia.[5]

Wasn't this the play-out music from that wretched and long-forgotten series "Lost"..
