Deliberately writing a hit record - by artists who wouldn't usually do this

I'm sure that there are other ones but these are the ones of which I know.

In each case they were a successful artist with a big fanbase but decided that they wanted to write a hit single and, more importantly did it.  Bruce went for the big American classic, Joan for something deliberately poppy and iwth interesting lyrics, and Robert Smith just blatantly wrote something light and commercial.

I wouldn't include in this deliberate one-ht wonders such as Cotton Eye Joe or Eidleweiss as they had no record of producing decent music prior to going for the hit.

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

Joan Armatrading - Drop the Pilot; the only song I know to use the word "mahout" - an elephant rider.

The Cure - The Lovecats

I must have tried half a dozen YT vids before giving up on them as none would embed.

These are all from Daily Motion and each worked first time.
