Hole in tree

Question

Anyone know what makes holes in trees? I'm wondering if it's a squirrel or a woodpecker, haven't seen or heard anything though. It's an old crabapple tree, not too healthy anyway. I'm considering cutting it down but don't know what's making the hole. Diameter is about 8cm and about 5 ft up. It made one in the same tree this time last year, about 7ft up. Will get a photo tomorrow.

Surely not the right time of year for a woodpecker as most birds have young in the spring?

reformed nice guy

It was a boy tree, now its a girl tree.

Poor thing will have to keep gouging the hole or it will fill itself in over time.

Woodpecker..  possibly,  though I would have thought they would go a bit higher up.

Is it something just chewing the bark off or properly burrowing into the wood?

Might be fun to get one of those motion activated wildlife cams and see who comes to pay you a visit?
