Fucking over the GPS system.

One day nothing will move unless it digitally knows where it is.

As the 184-metre-long tanker was docking in Novorossiysk, Le Meur was on the ship's bridge overseeing the final approach. Suddenly, the ship's warning signals started blaring.

At the time, the AIS system showed around 20 to 25 large boats were also marooned at Gelendzhik airport some 30 miles inland. Worried about the situation, Le Meur radioed the ships. The responses all confirmed the same thing: something, or someone, was meddling with the their GPS.

GPS is over accurate. Charts aren't.

Racing a few years ago in Tobago, we put the coordinates for the second mark into the system. It was half way up the runway on the mainland.

Lesson is that islands charted a few hundred years ago aren't exactly where they think they are. Nothing replaces the mark one eyeball and some common sense.

OK, we do lack a thread for this.

What do we think will be the next Black Swan to shake it all up?

I have gone with Spanish Civil War on the other thread...

I am going to expand on this now.

My theory has on its side the many versions of history repeating itself. Europe for many a centenary has been the world center of conflict and innovation. Like some kind of continental Jekyll and Hyde, it lurches from influencing the remotest places on earth to introspection of the most violent kind.

The parallels with the 1930's are palpable:

- Aftermath of a great financial collapse and a lengthy depression following;

- An increasingly polorised policical landscape with the far left and far right dominant in the agenda;

- A new paradigm of technology, then telephony, radio, early TV and air travel increasing communications rapidly; now, of course, the internet and social media.

On top of this febrile landscape, the search for scapegoats was on. In much of Europe, there was anti-Jewish sentiment for the ills of their society, particularly the Jewish influence over banking, which brought parts of Europe to its knees. Germany became the center of the resentment, perhaps due to it being the country that had suffered most of the economic pain that was being blamed on the Jewish population.

Now we see Germany being the center of a new crisis, the migration of millions of third world (mainly) Muslims and a building resentment towards them.

Alongside this comes my Black Swan: The Spanish Civil War of the 30's added a sense of chaos to mainstream Europe. A repeat now would do the same many times over and almost certainly, as then, lead us to a World War.
