We rented this place from Jan until Dec this year while we looked for a new home. It's only gone up by £25 a month. The landlord takes pets as well. I'd have been happy paying 1k a month so I think he's missing a trick.

It's got a woodburner so that's me sold. For that money you would only get a small chatty 3 bed semi detached in an OK ish area locally.

Yeah rooms were larger than they looked in the photos. We saw a whatapp video of it and rented without viewing due to other pressures and lockdown. We have a cat and dog so our choice was even more limited.

One of the universities has accomodation recently constructed or ongoing, Stanley Studios being one of them where it looks like you can enjoy falling asleep to your cooking odours.

Plenty of HMO's around areas like St Deny's and near the hospital in the Northam area, probably beds in sheds as well for the undocumented workers. Much the same in most university cities/towns? Reading is similar in the surrounding areas of the university.

How is Shirley these days? I lived in Portswood. Haha is that place Jesters still there?

Don't venture over that way much on my travels but I doubt it's changed much, looks like Jesters is still going.

Rents will have to shoot up. Bit of a problem for the gov’ with the housing benefit but hey too late now.

Rents won't shoot up unless they put housing benefit up.

Hang on, didn't rents in the Isle of Wight go far above Housing Benefit rates last summer.

The only thing housing benefit does is increase the floor at the bottom.

Yes, but I would exclude us from anything 'normal' when looking at these things.

Our market is now set by immigration, not locals.

Yet the same was true in London between 2011 and 2015 and has occurred elsewhere. I really wouldn't be blaming immigration for something that can be triggered be a lot of external factors.

Our immigration is 55 year old retired civil servants from Maidenhead with gold plated pensions and vast property wealth.

Which also applies to half the SW, Lake District and a lot of the coast.

I went round the shops yesterday (I know) and saw a lot of job vacancies up.

This is what happens when the people who do these low wage jobs cannot afford to rent anywhere.

Rental supply round here is so low owing to people relocating from the SE and buying the rental stock, as happened to you ate your previous place, that simple scarcity is pushing up the prices.

HMO have exploded in my area over the past few years, with a lot on a copper bottomed deal with Serco to house single male asylum seekers.  One local landlord has evicted all her families and turned all her properties into pooly done HMO on the Serco contract.

The students have largely abandoned the older style HMO in the city in favour of the new expensive student apartments and a lot of those landlords have also been bailed out by getting Serco asylum seeker contracts.

The place we rented upto buying in 2017 has gone from £400pcm to £650pcm without any visible interior improvements. A couple of friends have been trying to get private rentals after their landlords evicted them to go Serco HMO. Anything half decent that comes on the private rental market is gone in a day.

It's utter madness in this part of the NW and sadly I don't see that changing in 2022.

I suspect this is going to carry on - we've got maybe 92 single young boat people in the local hotel.

That's an awful lot of other housing needed.

I want my son to be able to afford to buy a house at some point.

HMO and more immigrants mean he won't be able to.

Why not?  I always did after having a break because I was then looking for a job and that's for what it's intended.

I've only signed on once after I'd left education and was waiting to join the army. I'm assuming JSA is still not means tested for 6 months? I hope to claim it when I finish my paye job in the future before declaring that I'm self employed at the hotel I Co own with the other half. There may be done difficulties with this plan like having resigned rather than being made redundant ect that might make claiming difficult.

My view is ive paid a ton of taxes and ni contributions over the years so want something back however small.

@King Pendais probably the resident benefits expert.

I'm the contibutions-based JSA expert having had the full six months on three occasions; most recently last year!  Though yes his Kingship knows the rest of the system well.

To qualify for non-means tested / contributions based JSA at a princely £74 a week you need to have "sufficient" NI contributions over the prior two tax years, essentially the same amount as qualifies you for a state pension year so not that much, and be actively looking for work.

That's basically it.  Interviews last time were roughly two a month, i.e. not the same fortnightly fixed time as it used to be, and were on the phone though presumably will go back to being in person.  I was making maybe one job application a week though owing to long timescales before closing I could have three or four on the go at any time.  All my updates were verbal with no requiement to supply evidence; though I could easily have done so if required which I think they could tell and so didn't ask.

If I take a temp job in 2022/23 for a few months then I can go for a fourth six months JSA in 2023/24.  It's about £2k a pop so £8k for four times which is my way of obtaining a refund on my NI.

I think it's called the new style jobseekers  allowance. Non means tested, but you have to have been PAYE in the last 12 months.

Far from it I had to get someone to do the claim for me but I am learning fast.

Can you decide what to apply for? I guess if they forced me to apply for a pot washing job I could just truthfully talk about previous job roles, earnings and having had treatment for a bad back ie apply but put off getting a job offer?

Oh absolutely.  I only ever applied for finance jobs and, whilst not being entirely unrealistic, was deliberately applying for those jobs where my lack of experience in that particular specialism would count against me.  I was also applying only for high salary jobs and, in the event of getting one, I would have taken it up for a year or so.

There was no suggestion of looking at any other lines of work.

I think it's because there are a lot of unemployed at the moment so from the DWP's perspective they focus upon those likely to be long term claimants, so permanently increasing the numbers, whereas they know that contributions-based people, even if they don't get a job, will disappear from both the stats and their worklists in six months.

Good to know, I'll file it away in the memory banks.

There are thousands in hotels spread all over the country on the quiet. During lockdown the home office was moving asylum seekers by the mini bus full from a holding centre in the South East, up to a Serco run initial accommodation in Liverpool.

From Liverpool they then dispersed them all over the North West to cities, towns and villages. While the plebs remained locked up in our homes and could only leave home for 1 hour a day for exercise. Same was happening in every other region of England.
