Certainly seems to be more "value for money" in the village houses compared to the towns. I wouldn't say "London money" counts for a lot any more, prices in the South West are on a par with many London areas now.

Edit to add. 12 times local salaries blows this 5.5x mortgage at 95% LTV, dead in the water. No FTB can afford it.
