Cloning a sim card

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know of anyway I can clone a sim card so that I end up with two cards with the same phone number?

The reason is that I do not wish to take my expensive mobile with me when sailing.

At present I have to transfer the sim card to my cheapo nokia.

A local phone shop should have a SIM card reader and be able to do it for you for a nominal fee.

Or you can buy one from ebay for a small amount - but you need to get one with the right software and one that will clone your particular card. So it might be easier to go to a shop where they have the kit working.

It is possible, but quite technical -- it isn't a matter of simply reading data and writing onto the new card.  The key bit in this process, the sim-KI isn't readable, but is used by the sim being interrogated by the phone and it responding appropriately.  Now, you can work out the KI -- simply do the KI interrogation a massive amount of times and back-compute what the KI would have to be.

But this is quite a bit of a hassle for a simple 'I want to use my nokia on a boat'

What's more, the networks would probably be okay with the cloned sim up and until the point where you forget to turn the other phone off first, at which point they'd flag up a cloned sim, assume (quite reasonably) that it is some kind of fraud, and block the sim until you ring up (with another phone) to complain about how your phone doesn't work any more.

Far easier and safer just to buy a payg sim and set up a forward to the payg when you're off and sailing.

Or you could not bother with the forwarding, leave the payg number with your wife/friend/boss for use in emergency, and enjoy your sailing without disturbance.

No, I want the same number on it.

Those ebay devices only copy the directory, which I can do anyway on the Nokia

I understand that these are available in Germany for businesses

That's multisim, which is a different thing.

They issue two sims with two different 'codes', then on the network side do the automatic switching.

You're after a cloned sim.  This is against the T&Cs (not sure about legality).  If you have both turned on at the same time it causes all sorts of problems and would likely flag you up as a fraudster and disconnect that sim from the network.

So, multisim -- I guess you could ask your network for it.  I'd imagine it would be expensive.

This and other similar ones are availble in vast numbers on ebay for a few quid but you need the right software - you can waste a fair bit of cash buying these and they simply do not work. Hence my suggestion of finding a local phone shop where a boy has been doing this for years. It won't be an advertised service but if you go into one, explain the reason why you want it done then I suspect at least one local phone shop will have the kit and software to do it there and then.

Yes, you get it cloned - 100%. See my post above.
