Council Tax rage

Calcutta

Recommended Posts

Have just had my first council tax bill after a few years in HMOs.

Fucking 1600 quid the robbing cunts.

My bins are collected privately, the police are non existent, there's no chance they're going to fill in all the potholes.

What I want to know is do councils provide any other service I could avail myself of to try and at least get some value for my money?

Do they actually achieved anything except steal money and give it to scum?

They used to provide decent adult education at a very cheap price but now unless you have the magic benefits card you are paying full whack, and it's almost all art or alternative medicine courses.

We do have some decent parks and gardens to enjoy, and the CT is funding those.

My local council park has car parking. It was free but the new charge is now £2.50 for all day ticket. There is no 1hour ticket. Really annoys me this kind of thing. But I guess it will stop the usual filling up the park?

Yes, I have similar mixed feelings as you want there to be spaces in the car park but don't want it to be too expensive.  £2.50 for the day sounds ok.

What annoys me is where, and I only have the one example, an area only used for walkers where people have always parked by the road and I have never seen the area even half full, has tight time restrictions placed upon it.  Not a fee, just max 2 hours and you can't do the full walk in two hours (down to Praa Sands) unless you barely stop.  That is being a pian for teh sake of it.

We have an hour free in two of the seafront car parks. Not quite long enough for a quick lunch so it is £4.60 for two hours.

Doesn't really raise much money as 50% of people don't have to pay it.

...I also tried to find an image of a Council Tax Bill and someone being held by their testicles, but this is the nearest I could come up with.....

.......Just imagine Vinne is your local council worker and your testicles are their big fat DB pension!

It's not really £1,600. It is nearer £5k but the balance is paid from your other taxes.

it would be much more honest if they dropped that aspect and put the whole lot on council tax.

How are people in big houses being subsidised?  It’s about the resources you use that someone has got to pay for. A large family in the same house will take a lot more resources.

And it isnt even big houses. Mine is Band G, second highest, despite being 1500 sq ft.

House 2 doors up is 7,000 sq ft and same band.

Yes it is, the problem is that there is widespread belief even on here as evidenced by @Wight Flight that council tax bands represent the size of the house so in this so called "Progressive" tax society we have in the UK, where people want wealthy people to pay more, they blindly support it, without realising that it's not applied fairly.

But surely, council tax is supposed to pay for local services, so basing it on the ‘value’ of a property is madness. Im not saying this from vested interest as mine is a D band.  I think I’m coming to the view that the poll tax was a much fairer system but that got stopped. I also think that everyone should pay. Maybe a discount for those with a low income, it should not be as crude as the Bennie free pass though.  I do agree that those with more than one property should be charged more given the pressure on housing, it’s one way to discourage the house hoarders.  I don’t really know what the answer is but do know that it will become less equitable under liebour

It's strange and not how most people blindly see it. I was having a look at places for sale in my locality and found a band B place that's larger than our 4 bed house. I was part way through working out how long it would take for the savings in council tax to outweigh the legal fees and stamp duty payable if we moved there.

Well the truly fair way would be to get people who use local services often, to pay more. Wealthy people, if we are to assume they all live in Band G-H houses, rarely use local services (they will often have private healthcare rather than use the local GP, wont use social services, wont send their kids to the local sink school, rarely use the bus, etc) , yet are expected to shoulder the costs even more.

No stopping at the Sand Bar for a pint then, nice place, summer with the terrace and winter with the picture windows. Only been in winter so easy parking in bar's car park for free as price off admission. Guess it is rammed in summer.
