Real-Time Lightening Strikes

Recommended Posts

Can anyone post the current thinking on what lightening is? What causes it?

Lightening storms scare me a lot when they’re nearby but I’m also in awe of their power and transfixed waiting to see the next sheet or fork.

I think it is generally accepted to be the opposite of darkening

Lightning is made of bangs and sparkles. It's caused by clouds filling up with sparks.

When sparks fall out of clouds they make a bang. No two sparks are alike, y'know.

They're the discharging of current in an electric field through the path of least resistance. I could talk about leader streamers but I don't want to bore you.

If your local library has it then "High Voltage Engineering: Fundamentals" by Kuffel et al will tell you all you need to know.

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=bEYvBQAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=high+voltage+engineering&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi_yfubtr3ZAhWDaFAKHR57BsIQ6AEIJDAA#v=onepage&q=high voltage engineering&f=false

Alternatively, this will probably do you just as well.

It's something to do with mirrors and plugs.

To be extra safe you must remove the plugs and turn mirrors around so they face the wall

There's some large storms rumbling around the Med at the moment.

And Australia is constantly active....particularly along the North Coast.

It doesn't work.

I keep clicking on that lightning map , but I can't make it strike Slough with lightning.
