Fatter, longer, heavier - Cars

Recommended Posts

Been out on the bike today and once I got out of our estate with its chicane of fat vehicles I had the usual event of being virtually forced into a ditch by some mong driving an SUV who wont go near the edge of a lane because it might make the effing thing dirty.

Anyway I dug out my 1974 observers book of cars I had when I was a kid and decided to see how a Ford Focus compared to other Fords of the time and conveniently the page had a Ford Escort (normal chaps car) on one side and a Granada (the Bosses car) on the other.

ford.thumb.jpg.2bdf4697f7c4f074775ba10d8065020c.jpg

Now a ford focus today is 14'3.5" Long & 6'7" Wide and Weighs 2797lb so if we ignore the length as it had a big inline engine it is well fatter than a Ford Granada and a few pounds heavier.

Whilst the Ford Escort is like one of those skinny 60s models with a mini skirt.

If anyone wants another comparison like a BMW 3.0 CSL vs an M3 or one of those fucking Audis then holler up and I will find the right page.

Even found out that Citroen had a car with a wanking engine, amazing, didn't know that!

Please do dig up the other cars in the spotters' guide! It's strange, but even after so many years, those look like cars "should".

Surely you jest ... even I had heard of the Wankel engine.

Here you go a Citroen with a Rotary Comotor engine and the oh so stylish D Special on the other page.

The Mini is particularly ridiculous to me. How can you call a car a Mini when it's bigger than the thing your average didicoy arrives in to tarmac your drive?

I don't think it's just that people have got fatter, I think it's also partly that people define themselves much more by their cars these days, so there's a market for bigger cars to match the image people want to project. I'm certain the explosion of people driving massive 4x4s called things like Warrior, Barbarian, Trojan and stupid things like that is a part of it.

And recently I've noticed a recent trend in car adverts showing animals bowing down in subservience to the driver of a car (one is Range Rover, another is a VW I think). It all points to selling an image that the driver wants to feel and project.

It's OK, I think Eye-Spy made a speeling mistake too.

The DS 23 Estate Safari should be a (shooting) Brake, not 'Break'.

I like the Birotor's 'special hub caps'. I bet that was a clincher in the salesroom.

I've decided that the world would be a better place if we all had something like Morris Minors / Minis.  We could have 100mpg engines, they could cost £5k but (importantly) they'd be so uncomfortable that you'd not want to commute for more than 30 mins.  All these massive comfortable cars just make it easier to drive to places.

What was it, a small one?

No, not that small, a Tipo being built by Ahmed in a few days. The engine design probably dates from the 70s. I was surprised to see how much power the Escort has.

Break is an acceptable spelling for a Brake, especially if you're french.

(it is to do with breaking-in horses, so the 'Brake' is the misspelling which became the norm.)

You can park two morris minors in the space required for an Audi Q7.

Speaking of Audis here is there offering for 1974 the Audi 80 and Audi 100, the equivalent of the A3 and A5 but I bet they are fucking obese in comparison.

      The Grenadier..
For anyone not familiar,  it is the soon to be British built replacement for the Land Rover.
Interesting to note they are looking at Diesel, hybrid and all electric drive trains,  so sounds like they will be pitching it hard at the military for their new electric ambitions.
No pictures of the vehicle yet,  just an artists impression of how the site at Bridgend will look:

      Recent article here:  https://www.motoring.com.au/more-details-shed-on-ineos-grenadier-4x4-120694/

It would be nice to see a proper British car again (Ok, with a german/Merc partner) ..  on a road near you from 2021..
Just thought I'd create a thread to plot its progress, release, success or collapse..

The story in the link below is a little short on detail but it's been expanded upon on the radio.
This applies from 2022, rather than some kick down the road 2040 date as for EVs, so it looks like it's going to happen.
The limiter is also going to be an "intelligent" limiter which will work on the speed limit of your road. You know those dot matrix signs on motorways where they leave up the 50mph limit for hours after any accident so you ignore them if the road is obviously clear: ignoring is no longer an option.
I'm not a great speeder myself but have a powerful car which lets me get past slow moving vehicles which usually involves speeding for the overtake and that won't be possible.
I know it's the EU but you can guarantee the UK will bring it in as well.
Anyone else see there being a huge premium on current, unlimited, fast cars in the future?

My car has broken down, was wondering if any of you lot have any ideas what the problem might be....
It did not start immediately this morning as it normally does, but did start and drive ok. I went out again a wee while ago and it again took a wee minute to start but then drove ok, maybe with a few “flat spots” with reduced power for a second or so.
I then started it again (took a few turns of the starter motor again) after being at the shops, when I stopped at some lights and was idling it cut out, started it again and drove home, half way there it was cutting out but would restart again (again taking a few turns of the starter before it started) then, after maybe 50ft it did it again, tried starting it again but it wouldn’t “catch”, kept trying but it wouldn’t start, then the lights on the dash went dimmer and it wouldn’t even turn over at all.
Gonna have to take it to the garage, will be heavy steering while I’m getting towed but there’s no way I’m paying for a tow truck, can’t afford it anyway.
      Fuck.
      It’s a 2.0 diesel Mazda btw.
