Yep, I remember telling people back in 2002 that it was a bubble and it would crash soon. Disbelieving looks, even though it was only 7 years after 1997.

But instead of STRing I paid down my mortgage fast and sat tight. Been mortgage free for well over a decade. The STRers would have been far better off doing that buying gold, then shares, then bit coin. Not that they were to know, of course, back in 2002. And I felt aggrieved for a while that I was missing 0% IRs. But I got over it after a couple of years.

Make life choices that make you happiest and ne regrette rien. Its pointless.

Bit of an anecdote.  A friends son has a new neighbour, North London, bought for cash using profir from bit coin.

pwopatee bulls dont get it,. never will.

But in the menatime, while his gold and bitcoin grew in value, Ive had two and a half decades of living landlord free and 15 years of living rent free. Swings and roundabouts. You cant live in a bitcoin. You cant even stroke it and mutter about it being Precioussssss.

And incidentally, I have a non property 'portfolio' big enough to buy a house, too, now. AFAIK none of it is in either of those two asset classes. I dont feel Ive missed out. I havent invested in Nigerian princes either. Both of those I would class as gambling on things with little (gold) and no (bitcoin) intrinsic value rather than investments, which are things that have a value that produces a yield.

Did exactly the same.  I thought that if it is going down, I will still need somewhere to live but didn't want the bank knocking on the door.  Forwent the holidays and flash cars and paid the mortgage down.

I mostly agree but gold has value (if no yield, which is a huge negative for me) and virtual currencies, as opposed to Bitcoin in particular, can be a good way to make money if you really understand them (I don't however!).

In the event of a major property crash I will be buying somewhere incredible, if it never does then I'm happy in my lovely house with its beautiful view.

They are reporting falls over the three year  period of up to 10% so around 3% per year, nothing really when prices have risen by 40% in the last four years and a fall of 30% would tale us back to 2014 prices ... still bubbletastic. Average prices in London (from the article) are £500,000. So even of you sell now and buy back in after the fall ... let's say a fall of 20% you will probably spend the 45k on rent with 20k on sdlt and fees (when you buy back in) and so make 35k plus whatever the opportunity of having £500,000 allows. If falls are only (the article say up to) 10% then the 50k benefit disappears on rent and fees but you still have the opportunity gains from the £500k. Will they be taxed to high heaven - doubt it, confiscated - no chance, requisitioned - when hell freezes over. But as many here actually recognise there are no real financial gains from owning, the soft benefits are not having to move and not having to pay rent and not having inspections as if you were seven years old and being able to put up pictures, decorate and smoke and have pets.

We bought four  years ago for cash and have gained financially as the return on cash did not / would not cover the rent, probably because I am crap at investing capital to gain both capital growth and income. However even as a home owner  I would like prices to fall (50% would be nice) so I can buy a better place at a cheaper price but the benefits of buying have been the soft benefits above. Ten years on from 2008 and we finally have some falls in London ... of 10% over 3 years predicted, when in many areas over this period price went up by 100%.

I've pretty much given up on ToS now.  It was becoming soul destroying.

10 years of madness has taken it's toll.

I noticed today though when I had a lurk that some ToSsers are trolling me even in my absence :wanker:

Someone's come back 10 years later to tell every how wrong I was.  Well done him.  Trolling over a decade takes some going.

I dont think they've noticed that everyone's left bar the trolls.

Hi Count i got a PM that day when responding to that genius boasting of his savvy investment. Keep getting banned from HPC for my swear word addiction that seems to come the fore when talking about Hammond, May and the main players of the last 2 decades and what i wish for them.

Seems DB being banned is going to bring many from HPC over to here. HPC has turned into a pissing contest amongst angry and tired posters. Banning DB could be the demise of it ironically just as a slight fall in prices seems to be happening.

I'm thinking of sticking my little one in a top school Bangkok if nothing changes in the next 14 months, give her a chance to live a completely different life to most with different opportunities, though a settled life in a nice part of England would have always been my preference.

Oh and why is HPC called TOS?

Dosbods is short for the legendary thread on HPC off topic started by a poster called carbon life form....Deluded Old Scrapper Birds on Dating Sites.

I’ve no idea why it was chosen as the forum name by the forum founder @spunko2010.

I like being a dosbodder though. It’s a great forum with lots of interesting discussion and humour.

Yes strange, finally some decent financial offerings over at HPC and TPTB want to silence it.

Someone somewhere must have their reasons, but its odd that on the "house prices and the economy" forum they didn't want people discussing the economy!

Ahhh. That makes sense. Think that was the thread that was moderated and pissed people off.

I only found the place cause TMT disappeared and wondered if he was dead. Found him here alive and well.

I stopped for a while bit started again as I'm now pretty sure prices are falling for more than 1 reason.

Yes there are many reasons. Seeing a couple of properties come on for less than they sold for in 2017, but still 30-50% more than pre HTB levels.

I say it every year, but there are glimmers that this could be the year for notable drops to let people know property isn't a one way bet.

All down to what the banks have in their back pockets to throw at the bubble, is ZIRP and the remnants of TFS enough to keep things stagnating.

Probably enough to keep to keep it soldiering along till Carney leaves.  Just.

The wheels are definitely starting to work their way loose. As with all things it's impossible to know when its going to kick off but I expect its fairly soon as I really can't see any more tricks available plus the Brexit excuse has a finite expiry date.

I can't remember who suggested it originally, but there was a thread on ToS with a few people suggesting domain names and that one was the favoured one.

Mrs Satch thinks dosbods is DOS Bods and this is really Disk Operating System and the Bods bit are Geeks who talk and post about PC operating systems. I think I will let that thought persist rather than enlighten her.

I left TOS due to the blatant leftist/liberal bias of the mods.

Whilst discussing immigration and Islam on there someone said he didn't care how many children were blown up by terrorists as it was a price worth paying for diversity. I took him to task for it and they moderated ME!

Lo and behold there's a couple of them on the old thread now lamenting the existence of this place as it's full of racist and xenophobic posts.

I haven't seen one post that could be classed as such, not even by their extreme and demented definition.

Always the instinct is to repress freedoms of thought and speech.

Vile little twerps.
