On my trip last week I had a conversation with a fellow diner. He was a remainer and a socialist to boot. We didn't agree on very much, well we did agree that it was nice and sunny in Italy (another GAP year trip :).) The conversation veered onto some of my favourite topics. Immigration, political interference in the UK by the EU, Trump, the pay gap, Jordan Peterson.

He and his wife disagreed with everything I said. Funny though they "ran care homes". Don't know whether they owned them or just ran them. Anyway after I put forward a number of arguments supporting my position and, I like to think, demolishing theirs, he countered all my reasonable points by saying we should stop this discussion as we'll never agree.

I wish I'd thought of the counter argument to put, I like to discuss contentious issues as I think they only way to work differences out is to talk them through. Not dismiss points of difference as a reason to stop a discussion.

You have more patience than me. I met similar in the park whilst walking the hound a couple of days ago. He said we will be destroyed because of tariffs. I countered with, well the trade deficit is 70 billion in their favour, so their pain will be greater. He changed the subject, I think to how awful trump is.

You are just slapping your gums. They are not going to listen to reasoned argument and debate. The problem is, on logistics and cold, hard facts, we can win hands down. So, they will not engage and rely on emotional responses

Was bored, so I had a look for a picture of a prize bell-end and all that came up was this.

Looks like there is a bit of a gap to fill out there.

It has the same effect

It's human nature though. If a bloke in the park doesn't like Trump (for example) there is nothing you can say which will lead to him leaving the park having changed his mind, no matter how accurate and well-constructed your argument.

Bang on. Perception is reality.

I dunno, my views change on a lot of things after reading about them and considering them some more. It's why I like the ChangeMyView subreddit. Example: https://old.reddit.com/r/changemyview/comments/8jzpca/cmv_people_who_have_been_wrongfully_imprisoned/

If the person making the arguments is calm and reasoned I would consider their points at least.

You'd think so wouldn't you as it makes perfect sense to change your mind especially if based on new information.

Most people decide what they're comfortable with based on a wide range of factors, and "truthful information inputs" are well down the list in comparison to childhood upbringing, peer pressure, and so on. This is why the average Internet forum debate is such a poo slinging affair - if you disagree you are not seen merely as offering an alternative point of view you are seen as an attacker trying to undermine what their beloved mum and dad told them and which they have held loyal to all their lives.

In fact changing your mind is positively frowned on in our society and you are likely to be accused of "flip-flopping on the issues" and similar things.

I'm not much of a redditor but I'll try that sub.

Well I think that's a personality flaw and shouldn't be celebrated. Many people fawn over Thatcher and her ability to never change her mind, I can understand it as a political leader (even if you have changed your mind in private) to present that you haven't, but if you are genuinely like that in real life I suspect you have a mild personality disorder.

I go on there to see what's been posted but been unable to load more than the thread list since yesterday.Strange.it was still ticking over compared to the Economy  section here i.e had more posters posting more frequently, but then of late Dosbods picked up and they dropped off..

If you include the off topic section then this place was substantially busier than ToS.ToS stopped publishing user numbers a while back

Top of the market call.

The place died for me when they started waving the social justice flags and dishing out moderation of comments to inoffensive posters like me and Durhamborn.I got put on moderation for a thought crime of some sort but they never told me what it was.Same with DB.

How the hell can you debate through an economic crisis if it takes three days for your posts to appear.

It'd be nice if a few more people posted in the Economy section here. I'll have a think on how to attract some more in.

Have to say Spunko it's growing slowly but nicely. We seem to be gradually drawing a few new posters each week.

Be nice to have a few more threads though.
