A £5bn contract to run Wales' rail service for the next 15 years has been awarded to two European firms, who will run it jointly.

France's Keolis and Spanish-owned Amey's bid triumphed over a rival offer from Hong Kong's MTR commuter railways.

It will also develop the south Wales Metro, a project worth £5bn.

The company said while the changes would not happen overnight Wales' railway "would be unrecognisable" in five years time.

That's impressive -- it took Arriva 15 years to achieve that.

It's yet again rubbing the nose in the idea of Brexit of course.  I think the contract should have been for maybe 5 years rather than 15 to see if a decent  British competitor might emerge after Brexit.

Sounds like Wales needs a new QUANGO overseeing this paying the board members several thousand pounds per day - just like they do with Welsh Water. Oh, is Carwyn resigning... but not resigning immediately but waiting until the Autumn.... Watch this space....

Taffia-land - surely just a work of fiction?

In the Labour years, these sorts of contracts used to allow European compnaies to milk the UK operation.

COmbinatin of Blair and Browns fuckwittery really did fuck over UK tax payer.

These days, where you have grown ups who can do sums looking at contracts, it will be at the Euro company's expense.

Just look a the loss of VirginStagecoach,.

The loss of that contract cost them both millions.

Thats how it should be.
