Odd childhood things that you took as normal

Recommended Posts

Where I used to play scratch games of football with my mates it was right by a zoo so the game was usually accompanied by lions roaring or the roses they make when shagging.  It was all quite loud.

Lions roaring as background to football kickabouts; it does seem a bit odd looking back.

When holidaying in Ireland at my Uncles in the late 70's early 80's it was normal that there was no running water and thus no toilet or bathroom.

Going to a water pump

and hand pumping water for cooking and a cat wash was normal.

Toileting in a field with grass as toilet roll was normal.

Using a potty at night and emptying it into the field was normal.

No TV was normal.

The entertainment being one of my many cousins playing an accordion was normal.

Happy carefree days they were :)

Cat wash=washing hands and face dues to little water available.

My uncle used to go to a public swimming pool, miles away for a wash once a week.

I know it probably sounds odd but its all true

not knowing who was ringing you until you picked up and said "Hello"

My mums auntie would wash her hair once a year. Mainly I think because there was no running water. It’s surprising that this for many is a relatively recent invention.

Having to prearrange meeting your mates under the clock because no one had phones

Being worried about getting told off from strangers while out and about

And thus everyone turning up on time as there was no way to cancel or be late!

The roads being black with coal having fallen from the lorries taking it from the pits as they cornered by the police roundabout in my village. And when the strikes were on people waiting by the corner to retrieve the coal.

I wash just thinking it must have been smelly but I no memory of people being smelly though the potties did stink!

And not worrying when someone didn’t turn up, just one of those things.

Now you would worry that they had been raped or murdered

According to me mam, she didn’t smell and her hair was beautiful and glossy.

The sand being black with coal and the sea very murky because they dumped the spoil into the sea.
