I once shared a flat for a year with a Libyan guy who was on my course at uni in the early 90s. A really great bloke and we shared loads of comedy moments together.

Late one night we were chatting and I asked him about his family and how they had ended up here in the UK. He told me how his father had been in the Libyan government and Gaddafi had offered him a very prominent position. His father asked if he would be able to instigate change and reform? Gaddafi replied he would do exactly as he was told, so he turned him down. I asked what happened next, my friend looked at me and said Gaddafi had him arrested and executed, I was shocked and horrified.

Not knowing what to say I blurted out, "...then you must of been gutted when he survived the US bombing?..." To my surprise he said, "...No [Mihnjeeta]..." and his next words have always stayed with me:

"...What you have to understand is that Gaddafi is one of, if not possibly the, richest man in the world now. He's been milking the country for decades. He's built palaces, bought cars and properties all over the world and has goodness knows how much gold and money stuffed away in Swiss bank accounts. So much money in fact, that in recent years he's actually started helping the people by spending on building hospitals, motorways and infrastructure - out of sheer boredom if nothing else. If someone killed Gaddafi now, all that would happen is that Libya would descend into anarchy and violence until the biggest, meanest Warlord won out, and then the whole process would start over again. So no, I would not wish that on my people..."

Unfortunately, it looks like my friend was utterly correct.

So what is going on here then?  Libya on the brink of another coup. Khalifa Hifter (great name) has ordered his troops to take Tripoli.   Looking at his wiki he spent a lot of time living in the US.  US puppet?

"Haftar was born in the Libyan city of Ajdabiya. He served in the Libyan army under Muammar Gaddafi, and took part in the coup that brought Gaddafi to power in 1969. He took part in the Libyan contingent against Israel in the Yom Kippur War of 1973.[3] In 1987, he became a prisoner of war during the war against Chad after being lulled into a trap and captured, then a major embarrassment for Gaddafi and represented a major blow to Gaddafi's ambitions in Chad. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Gaddafi. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in Langley, Virginia in the US, gaining U.S. citizenship.[4] In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Yep, Saddam too.  The world would be a better place today.

I don't know whether you said thai in jest, but I think like that would be true. Destabilising some of these regimes has not been a good idea.

No, completely serious.

I never went to Libya, but I'm told it was pretty OK, compared to some places I went.

I'm old enough* to have been to places that you just can't go to now, and have not gone to places in the olden days because they're bad/shitholes but have been to recently and they're rather nice.

All that leads me to think about:

  • Which countries that are currently shitholes will become rather nice?
  • Which countries that are currently nice (or 'possible to overlook nasty') will become shitholes?

[* which only means 'I remember the Iron Curtain']

I was only there two weeks and most of that time was spent on a oil refinery other than a hotel and the airport i did not see that much ,but it seemed a happy safe place

A relative was there for years they said it was preferable to all of the gulf states he had worked in

I'd rather it was a warzone feeding immigrants to sharks than a content place funnelling weapons to the IRA.

Unfortunately, the immigrants have here as a possible destination. If they were eaten by sharks, they wouldn't have immigrated.

Didn't realise that Sarkozy had been detained this morning in connection with these allegations. I am sure that he will be proved innocent and so will any other Western politician who may find him or herself in a similar predicament.
