POLICING THE NEWS: Armed Police ARREST Newspaper Publisher

Recommended Posts

Danny Lockwood, publisher of ‘The Press’ a weekly paper in West Yorkshire was driving alone when he was stopped by three marked Police BMW X5s and an unmarked one, all carrying armed officers, the cops forced him off the A64.

The Press reported that Mr Lockwood was handcuffed and taken to York police station before being transferred to Dewsbury, to be questioned about three hate crimes concerning Dewsbury MP Paula Sherriff.

Be interesting to see what is going on here. Something happened at an MP's office? CCTV exists but the Police allegedly did not make it public even though, allegedly, the person in it being sought is clearly seen? The man they used armed Police to arrest is known to the MP and the MP does not think he would be involved? Lots of allegations it seems from both sides.

Not really clear what is going on but there sounds to be some worrying allegations about what happened and why it happened.

Sounds very worrying though. Why the need to use armed police on a man who appears to be well known, who publishes a newspaper of some kind and presumably would be happy to help the police if he had been asked. It scares me that the police are being used, or think they have the right to act, in this kind of way.

That's ridiculous for both the daftness of the alleged crimes and the manner of the arrest.

I keep hearing from police how much they are overstretched through budget cuts.  Why then deploy resources appropriate to catching an armed terrorist cell when they could have sent him a letter asking him to call in for an interview.

I do hope that he makes a formal complaint and the police officer who authorised such wasteful overkill is disciplined and ideally sacked.

This is the sort of thing I expect in Erdogan's Turkey and not the UK.

You do have to wonder whether people acting like this have any knowledge not just of historical police states but also of current ones? Do they not understand how one instance like this leads to another and then another. That soon, as Spencer Tracy's character pointed out in 'Inherit The Wind', soon we will be marching with torches back to a time when people burned books and imprisoned people simply for thinking differently.

From the original link it looks to me that this is the real reason for the overkill: bruised ego.  I would guess it's not the first time he's criticised them so they then decide to act as a criminal gang to scare him into silence.

Heads should roll for this, particularly Sykes and Atherton.

“Or maybe it’s just that Julie Sykes had a sense-of-humour failure at my calling them the Keystone Kops in my column last week. And she wonders why?”

It's a badly written article, not explaining who/what Julie Sykes is.

I'll keep an eye out for the X5s, thanks.

I was looking at one heading towards me this week and momentarily paused for thought.

It occurred to me how they look like a shark's head from the front. Slitty eye headlights. That curved bonnet.

I doubt they have very much understanding of either. It used to be fairly common knowledge, and a source of pride, that Britain was a free country which involved things like freedom of speech (to an extent), an unarmed, civilian police force not connected to central government, a Common Law which came from the people not the ruling class, etc. Nowadays that's all been swept away in favour of 'da feelz' and all that matters is the enforcement of approved thought and approved speech by whatever means necessary.

When they start coming after journalists, that is a sad day.

Yep. Eventually they then start to come after the last good cops in the bad town thing.

Good judges, lawyers and cops were targetted in Nazi Germany after the journalists had been silenced. Toe the line or be fired, or be imprisoned, or see your family carted off to the camps. Or carted off themselves.

It was all documented in the Nuremberg War Crime trials. But I suspect many of our coppers are not aware of that.

me and my mate when we were kids in his shitty old escort Mk1 (rusty 1100 popular) got forced to stop by a pair of coppers in a rover (big one) by them driving head on to us on the wrong side of the road, anyway we got out and asked what was wrong and they made up some shit, then my mate asked them why they stopped us so dangerously, anyway the driver said remember the film top gun? well we are top drivers, there was no danger.

They really were full of shit and were on a huge power trip (this was in the middle of a town early evening), Id not really come across such pricks prior to that, maybe these arseholes are the same, and have to big themselves up. No wonder they are distrusted/looked down on by so many people.

My mate actually knew the driver, and told me later that some mates of his dads used to beat the shit out of him in school years before.

he did call them keystone kops in his publication which wouldn't go down well with the boys and girls in blue

Do you mean that they are spelling nazis and would be horrendously offended at his spelling of "kops" when it should correctly be "cops"?

I recall openly describing the Alliance & Leicester as Fred Karno's Army in an email which they saw and I don't recall their arresting me at gunpoint in BMW 4x4s.
