Golly gosh words we no longer use

Recommended Posts

For some reason I was thinking about the word "diddums" this morning but a dosbod search led me to JFK, swiss democracy and Carl Fimble so it's still alive in dosbodland though I can't say I have heard of it spoken for years.

Here's the Guardians take on common words we no longer use.

A google search came u p with these..

Fiance ....sounds awkward ( now partner)

Pictures ( cinema)

Cool/ groovy...because they sound uncool.

Fortnight...no replacement because apparently there is no word for fortnight in nearly all foreign languages and multiculturalism affects our language.

Whom....far too difficult for mere mortals like  me and Sargeant Lewis to know how to use.

Gallavanting....though the Mrs actually used that one this morning without my prompting to refer to a friend on holiday.

The success of Fortnite (the game) will bring back fortnight I reckon.

I use fortnight all the time.  It's really good for determining if someone speaky english well enough to actually understand a detailed conversation, rather than just nodding for politeness (big problem in Asia).

"Can you do this in a fortnight?" *Nod* "Exellent, what day?"

I use as many old words and expressions as possible - partly for a laugh and partly to keep them in use.  Not all those listed so far but a fair few.

Old words like Conservative, Labour and LibDem seem to be increasingly going out of use to be replaced by LibLabCon.
