It has to grow. Be patient.

I planted a bulb once, and it grew into a nice Anglepoise lamp.

Being serious,  you just need to plant it in a sunny spot and wait a few weeks. I grew one once and it was worth the wait, be aware once they flower they leak this sticky nectar shit which is a pain to clean  off. 

interesting fact: most amaryllis sold in this country are not amaryllis but hippeastrum  trading standards need to investigate! :Old:

I've just been to Wikipedia (fount of knowledge). I don't know whether its South African, or South American, but it does appear to be an immigrant.
