Amazon are a rubbish retailer. Which is good for those online retailers that simply concentrate on doing the one thing well.

Amazon are bloody awful and I've started pointing out to the wife that most of the time they're double the price of the same items on ebay now.

The only advantage they supposedly have over ebay is the delivery service, but even that's been bloody useless recently.

I've stopped using them to buy anything now and I'm trying to get the missus to do the same.

Ebay is definitely cheaper these days, I reckon I now have a 60/20/20 spit between ebay/amazon/aliexpress now. However for expensive items I tend to go with Amazon because 9 times out of 10 they will side with the customer, where as ebay and paypal (who they own) will tell you to go do one. My dad brought something for £2.5k off Amazon marketplace. The marketplace seller tried fucking him over and wouldn't accept a return. I got Amazon to step in and the money was refunded by Amazon same day.

Ebay can feel like the equivalent of having to wade through the online equivalent of a car boot. Which it obviously is, in effect. I probably have more money than sense as 90% of the time I CBA with it. If making a big purchase then I'd shop about but for low value stuff I take the same approach as I do with physical shopping, buy it when I first see it and be done with it.

Sort by price - cheapest one that isn't dodgy as f*** or arriving from china in x months time wins.

Edinburgh Woollen Mill rescue deal to save 2,500 jobs

Edinburgh Woollen Mill, which sells mid-price knitwear and other clothing to older shoppers, is part of a stable of retail brands owned by billionaire businessman, Philip Day.

It is understood that Mr Day will effectively lend the group the money to buy the businesses which will be paid back over a number of years.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55632501

It's very Barclays/Protium esque. Barclays were "bust" in the financial crash so sold Protium 12.3 billion of their non performing assets and loaned them the money for the purchase! That's the way to get crap off your balance sheet and stay solvent.

Quote

The activities of Protium will initially be supported by $450 million of new funding provided by the partners of Protium and by a ten-year loan of $12.6 billion loan from Barclays.

I cant think of anywhere else in the UK that relies as much on both OAP moving there and spending money and UK tourisms than Bournemouth.

More a case of cunting govts for putting those who buy "workwear" out of work.

Should have moved production to China a long time ago, not sure how they've managed to stay in business for so long whilst paying English wages.

They only lasted so long due to furlough and the other handouts. Rishi extended it beyond the May local elections purely to stop the number of redundencies grabbing the headlines.

Yes that and the fact Boris and Hancock would have us locked up forever, so have to appease them.

Inevitable its extended until September.

Mitsibushi Motors are withdrawing from UK & EU markets (mentioning that emissions & safety regulations are getting too strict). Even the dealers are surpised by the news, the L200 & Outlander PHEV (hybrid) have been very good sellers.

Mitsubishi have been a bit shit for a few years now anyway, especially in the small car market where the latest Mirage has been condemned as a steaming pile of shite by reviews, and the Colt before it wasn't anything to brag about either.

They were good at making wacky fun stuff in the 90s and 2000s, but so was every other Japanese manufacturer at the time. I think Suzuki and Mazda have beaten them vastly in terms of imagination and adaption to trends in the last few years.

Mitsubishi have been extremely lazy in their car designs in the last few years. I think that they're just going to stick with Asian markets, maybe Australasia.

The aussie car market is an interesting one - much like american in that many people need a car to do big miles (due to distances/new suburb planning) but gas is very expensive, so the gas guzzlers cost an arm and a leg, unlike the US.  So you have big utes and rigs all over the shop, but also lots of microcars like europe...

Ebay is basically the same if not better than Amazon for a buyer. They have their 'money back guarantee' which basically means refund the buyer from their own pocket as soon as they ask, for whatever reason, then sort it out with the seller later.

Ask anyone who has sold significant amounts of stuff on ebay how that works out.

Has staying open been financially worthwhile for larger supermarkets and shops?

Numbers are from Tescos but assume a similar pattern for all shops that have invested to stay open: spent £900M to be covid compliant (adaptions, regulations ??), revenue grew by 7%, pre-tax profits fell by 20% (lots of fluffy nearly almost etc) https://www.bbc.com/news/business-56742832

Shop fitting used to be lucrative. I know loads of people, mainly chippies, who went into it, even for a short period, to crank up their earnings - weekend and night work. paying double.

It was also busy - shops were always reformatting, rebranding, refitting.

Now, the closest work is putting up big warehouses up and own the M1/A1.
