Buying a saxophone

mooncat69

Recommended Posts

I've got the itch for a cheap saxophone. I've no idea how I'll get on with it, so I don't want to spend much. I've never played a reed instrument before.

The easy(ish) choice is the Yamaha YAS-21/23/25/26/275 but these are looking quite expensive. Alternatively, Jupiter, Tevor James (or even gear4music) models seem to have a reasonable review.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. There's a Trevor James S1 at a (currently) reasonable price on eBay

Don't know much about the sax market myself but know the guy behind the site, so if one is recommended there then can be pretty sure a good choice, he has probably taught 100's if not 1,000's to play.

I've no idea if you've already bought but yamaha make the best student instruments IMO. Are you after tenor or alto? you may want to make sure it has an f# key. https://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?262201-How-crucial-is-the-high-F-key

Alternatively - take up God's instrument instead:

I think you only get "missing" keys if you buy a real antique one. The Yamaha ones are good. I have a Tenor. Mr Maynard, do not encourage bugling. You can form a brass section with Mr XYY?

Hi mooncat,

been doing my regualar mooch on ebay and saw this and thought of you. No idea if you are still in the market for a tenor but this a great price at the moment. May end up in a bidding war (no idea of your budget but if this goes for under 900 and you want rid you'll make your money and some). Also comes with a yamaha mouthpiece which is always a bones as these can cost a pretty penny.

Nowt wrong with that - a quick look puts your model in the ~ £1,200 bracket.

the 61 has a good write-up from those in the know: https://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?221357-What-tenor-compares-to-Yamaha-YTS-61

But then I'm just a trumpet player so this is not advice, best I can say is that I have 8 professional grade trumpets and three of those are Yamaha, and one student yamaha model which is great for the money.

Yes, it's the "cheap" student model. I got it cheaper than that, but maybe the price of brass has gone up, or maybe the pound has gone down. I don't really think you can find fault in Yamahs kit. My sister has just bought a cheapo Yamaha acoustic guitar to learn on, and it's absolutely fine for the money. I'm really a guitar man and I'd never had a sax before, but you can't really buy those cranky Chinese no name ones. You will never get them fixed, and you won't learn on them. I'm glad to hear your have more trumpets, than I have guitars.

Never got on with brass meself, despite being a Yorkshireman.

XYY does a bit a bit of trombone I believe. We almost have a band.

I think you've hit nail on head. Instruments have shot up over the last decade.
