Paperchase - get woke, go broke

Yet another case of virtue signalling being terribly, terribly bad for business

Paperchase has said it will not run any more marketing campaigns with the Daily Mail after an online backlash over an offer on the newspaper’s front page.

The stationery chain received hundreds of complaints on social media over the weekend over its promotion in Saturday’s Daily Mail offering readers free wrapping paper.

In response to the decision, the Mail blamed “internet trolls orchestrated by a small group of hard-left Corbynist individuals” trying to “suppress legitimate debate”.

The social media complaints, encouraged by the advocacy group Stop Funding Hate, called on Paperchase to end their relationship with the newspaper.

Over the weekend, Stop Funding Hate tweeted:

Stop Funding Hate (@StopFundingHate)

After a torrid few weeks of divisive stories about trans people, is a Daily Mail promotion really what customers want to see @FromPaperchase? #StartSpreadingLove #StopFundingHate https://t.co/T1psWVEFpk pic.twitter.com/BI5Vf0KTgd

In response, Paperchase invited their Twitter followers to share their views.

On Monday, a statement on the stationery chain’s Twitter page read:

Paperchase (@FromPaperchase)

We’ve listened to you about this weekend’s newspaper promotion. We now know we were wrong to do this - we’re truly sorry and we won’t ever do it again. Thanks for telling us what you really think and we apologise if we have let you down on this one. Lesson learnt.

Stationery chain Paperchase has become the latest retailer to say it intends to shut stores as the high street bloodbath shows no signs of being stemmed.

The under-pressure company, which has outlets in Plymouth and Exeter, has come up with rescue plan which will beg landlords for rent cuts and is likely to lead to shop closures.

The retailer, which has a large outlet in Drake Circus Shopping Centre and inside the new Next Home out-of-town store at Marsh Mills, has launched a company voluntary arrangement (CVA), a controversial insolvency restructuring procedure which will see it walk away from some locations.

The plans, put together by advisers at accountancy and business consultancy giant KPMG, propose a 50% rent reduction on 28 sites for three months.

After this period, Paperchase could either close the shops or seek a rent-free period, with a small number expected to close.

The idiots at StopFundingHate would be much better going after the "Daily Mail vouchers"  and "Metro vouchers" websites, they're rolling in it off that and their sites are shite. Wonder how much Paperchase used to pay them, a couple of grand a year maybe? Fuck all to DGMT.

I think they've been in trouble for a while. They are a classic mid range brand that has lost out to lower cost competitors, particularly greetings cards - their's cost upwards of £2.50, you can get decent ones in M & S for £1 and even less in the discount card shops.

Three words that tell you everything:    Private equity owned.

Complaints about that in 2017?  Paperchase as bad as Hitler.

No wonder Paperchase just said they give up.  They made a serious mistake in listening to the genocidal SJWs though.

It can't be good for the GDP statistics dodgy though the stats are.

Seriously say nothing and stay indoors.  Walls have ears and keep the curtains tight closed.

Hark! Is that the sound of the smallest violin in the world playing?
