Hahaha - where we live!

To be fair it does have 4 bedrooms and 3 reception rooms. Mrs B's choice not mine. It does have a large shed though for me to sit in.

Congratulations Kurt..   will await the imminent housing crash with popcorn on standby  popcorn.gif

Good luck with the man-shed idea..  that was what I thought too until it inexplicably turned into a summer house xD

Agreed.

We went for a larger house than our actual immediate needs because my Mother in Law stays with us for 3-4 months which is helpful as Jnr gets older. Also most of our social life is based around the home as we tend to invite friends round and get invited to theirs. Most are Persians of whom have a wide range of incomes so its fair on those with lower incomes to socialise like this as restaurants are un-affordable.

I have fond memories of times long past sitting on the floor around a rug for a meal. It makes for a rather pleasant and informal way to eat as a group. And I rather like Persian cooking as well, especially the crispy bits of rice and potato from the bottom of the pan (can never remember what its called) along with various other dishes, again don't ask me to name any of them.

I think you will enjoy the house because you will apreciate it for its real value - as a family home, somewhere you feel secure (relative to renting), where you have freedom to paint and decorate as you see fit and of course as a focal point for the all important social and family gatherings.

Well done. So does the mortgage compare to the rent? I agree with the FU LL. Took some balls to buy at what could be the top of the market.

1420 pcm for a 4 /5 bed as opposed to 1250 for a 2 bed shytehole.

That sounds reasonable, I"m paying 900pcm for a 2bed nice flat worth 320-330k, 10% deposit would mean monthly payments of... 1300 + insurance + repairs. Not that keen to borrow 300k and pay 50% more!

I am with you on that. Currently paying the same for a nice 4 bed detached with good sized garden and sea views. Worth maybe £500k.

Just hope I can stay long term.

Who can afford to bring up a family when a family home costs that figure? Its ludicrious. The only way that sort of property can be afforded is by those who luckily got on the ladder with a bigger semi or those starting out as doctors, consultants, dentists etc.

And not even then:

Husband surgeon, wife GP

  • Renovating £1.1m house in St Albans, mortgage £2,400 a month - check
  • Renting other house for £2,400 a month - check
  • Maserati - check
  • Antiques - check
  • Four children in public school - check

Vast debts as a consequence of all this.

  • Stage fake burglary of antiques for insurance claim - check
  • Eight years' in prison for fraud - check

Nobody can live these lifestyles without incurring eye watering amounts of debt.

And then when you have been showing off your apparent wealth for years going bankrupt and losing it all is far too ashaming to consider; so you break the law instead.

Lord Brocket did similar with classic cars.  Dumped them in a lake IIRC.

Congratulations Kurt.

It makes no odds if they crash because you're buying it to live in it not to flip it.

Did I read your saying you were starting home brewing? If so that's exactly what I did when I bought mine.  A combination of having the space to do it and a prior reluctance to buy all the bulky kit knowing that I would have to keep moving it.

Quite fancy giving Woodfords Wherry a go once i have the kit. I like Wherry on cask so would be interested to see what its like homebrewed. Cant buy it round here.

This looks like the business!

That looks ideal as a starter.

The one thing I would say is don't piss about with syphoning; a sterlised jug is much better.

What foolishness - trying to live the lifestyle of a senior City blagger on modest NHS wages.
