Best Songs of the Eighties

Recommended Posts

How this works:

I've listed the top ten selling singles below.  Cross off the one you like least and replace it with a song you think should be there as I have done.  Show the crossed out one first time but don't turn it into a chain.  The last number is highest chart position.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the original listing; I thought it would be much worse.  Though there is a clear bias to the first half of the decade when single sales were much higher; CDs started taking off from 1986.

If you can try to resist embedding YouTube videos as it makes it incredibly slow-loading when you have a few of these.

Ordering is irrelevant.

Haha, I hate all of those songs with a passion, without exception.

Nearly as bad, I loathe 7 out of the 10 and wouldn't choose the other 3 although not too bad.

Still, here you go. I've assumed we are only talking about hits and not any old unknown song of the 80s that I might happen to like,

I'm a bit surprised that the thread has got this far and "Karma Chameleon" is still in there.

Of the original 10, I'd have said that "The Power of Love" is the worst, followed by that one.

I shall ponder the list. While I'd give the Band Aid one a certain amount of special dispensation I don't actually think it's a bad song by any means. An unusually credible, decent effort at a charity record and the tune still holds up well today both lyrically and musically IMO. Every attempt to cover it, apart from the Stock, Aitken and Waterman one - Band Aid 2, I think, has come up with something worse whereas that one is about level in most ways but the original is king.

"Come on Eileen" and "The Safety Dance" are the stuff of legend.

If I can be cheeky enough to suggest another one...

Begrudgingly erased the Human League of the list. Holly Johnson & his former bandmates can at least feel proud in the company of this forum. :)

I never realised I liked 1980s music as much as I did. There are so many other songs I could have picked for this list:

Souvenir - OMD

Enola Gay - OMD

The Model - Kraftwerk

Subdivisions - Rush

There is a light that never goes out - The Smiths

Sally Cinammon - The Stone Roses

Life is what you make it - Talk Talk

Magic's Wand - Whodini

A rep for the obscure China Crisis song (above quote not appearing for some reason). Top brand. They brought a new album out last year which is one of their best - and sold about 4 copies.

Thanks for the heads up on the new(ish) album. I had no idea. Hope against hope that it came out on vinyl. Flaunt the Imperfection still gets regularly played. The addition of Walter Becker was inspired.

Never thought I'd say this to one of my favourite posters but for that suggestion, you can indeed crawl back under a stone.:PissedOff:

Allergic to the whiney Houston tone (though I can hear as well as anyone that she was technically brilliant)

No problem. The album's called Autumn in the Neighbourhood. It was on some crowdfunding thing and came out on CD/MP3. I'm not sure it even made it to retail/streaming. If you see it on vinyl let me know! (BTW, the track called Fool on there is quite possibly one of their worst songs ever, but not reflective of the rest of the album - its sung and written by Eddie, the guitarist, rather than the lead singer, which might explain it - lovely chap though). If you have a problem finding it PM me.

She sounds rather mechanical in her studio recordings.

Live, she was absolutely incredible.

I've had a flip through my music collection from the 1980s. My tastes back then and probably still now aren't necessarily more commercial - after all most of the ones in the list so far were big sellers - but are more up-tempo and poppy than the general consensus on here.

I humbly put forward the following for consideration and perhaps merriment, in this approximate order:

Vangelis - Chariots of Fire
Steve "Silk" Hurley - Jack Your Body
S'Express - Theme from S'Express
Toto - Africa
Pet Shop Boys - Always on My Mind
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Yello - The Race
Black Box - Ride on Time

My list looks a bit different to the one running through the thread. I'd have Blondie's "Atomic" out of there immediately along with, more reluctantly, FGTH's "Two Tribes".
