A group of schoolchildren waiting for a bus have been attacked by a knife-wielding man in a Japanese city just south of Tokyo.

At least 18 people were injured on a residential street in Kawasaki. Two of them, a 12-year-old girl and a 39-year-old man, are dead.

A suspect, a man in his 50s, reportedly stabbed himself in the neck and was later detained. He has now also died from his injuries.

The motive for the attack is unknown.

Sixteen of those injured are said to be schoolgirls, according to news site Kyodo.

Police responding to the incident recovered two knives at the scene, said NHK.

weird one. I don’t think they have a problem with stabby blowy people. It might be a genuine mentally ill lone wolf.

Bizarrely, for this kind of story, they stated that the schoolgirls were waiting for a bus to a private catholic school.

In Japan with the public schools they have adults forming a line, spaced every few yards, to monitor the safety of the kids on their way to and from school. So precious are children as a resource there. The private school kids did not have this and hence they were the easier target.

There is a huge amount of Japanese anime, video gamee and comics where the heroines or villains are dressed exactly in the way that these schoolgirls are. It would not surprise me if this has some connection. Taking a fantasy from one of those into the real world.
